5A Piper knocks off 4A’s top team:
The biggest event of the evening was Piper upsetting Eudora 58-50. Eudora was ranked #1 in 4A in the final season poll last Tuesday. The upset is interesting, but won’t have much bearing on what happens in the post-season. Eudora still gets the top seed in 4A and will face Louisburg on Wednesday. Eudora’s height with 6-foot-6 forwards Jaden Hamm Jaden Hamm 6'6" | C Eudora | 2023 KS and Traeger Rader will be tough for 4A teams to match.
Blue Valley North Peaking:
Blue Valley North might be getting hot at the right time. They beat tough St. James last night 70-69. The Mustangs 13-7 record has them right in the middle of the pack in 6A, and they’ll start with a really tough first-round match with Olathe Northwest. That meeting of 8 and 9 seeds looks to be the best game of the first round. Blue Valley North is led by the veteran guard tandem of Kernan Bundy Kernan Bundy 6'3" | SG Blue Valley North | 2022 State KS and JD Roane, a versatile and athletic pair that combine for about 25 points per game.
Basehor-Linwood finished strong:
Basehor-Linwood wrapped the season 18-2 by flexing it’s muscles in a blowout of Shawnee Heights. The top KC team in the 5A ranks, the Bobcats got the #1 seed in the East, making the West bracket really tough – Kapaun, Topeka West, Hays and Andover Central were all ranked ahead of Basehor-Linwood in the final 5A poll. Basehor-Linwood is stacked with senior guards Carter Bergman Carter Bergman 6'1" | SG Basehor-Linwood | 2022 State KS (14 ppg) and Trevor Mcbride Trevor Mcbride 6'2" | CG Basehor Linwood | 2022 State KS (11.5 ppg) and junior guard Tyson Ruud Tyson Ruud 6'5" | SF Basehor-Linwood | 2023 State KS (15 ppg).
DeSoto claims #2 seed at 5A sub-state:
DeSoto got by Leavenworth 55-49 and grabbed the second slot at sub-state. The two teams will meet again Tuesday as Leavenworth got the 15th seed. Sophomore guard David Cobin David Cobin 5'10" | PG De Soto | 2024 State #285 Nation KS has really taken the reigns of the team, but seniors Ethan and Tyler Schultze Tyler Schultze 5'10" | PG DeSoto | 2022 State KS are solid leaders and producers as well.
Blue Valley Northwest grabs top seed in 6A:
The Huskies finished the season with a couple of wins over highly ranked, albeit smaller classification schools, St. James and Miege. They will kick off sub-state with Shawnee Mission West. Guard Grant Stubblefield Grant Stubblefield 6'2" | PG Blue Valley Northwest | 2023 State KS (pictured) leads the way with 19 points per game. He rocketed to #32 in the recent 2023 rankings, and could go higher if the Huskies have a nice postseason. Senior Avnoor Bhullar Avnoor Bhullar 6'0" | CG Blue Valley Northwest | 2022 State KS adds 11.5 points per game and could see a bump from his spot at 93 in the 2022 rankings.
Aidan Shaw Aidan Shaw 6'7" | SF Blue Valley | 2022 State #40 Nation KS leads in scoring:
Stats aren’t completely finalized, but it appears that Aidan Shaw Aidan Shaw 6'7" | SF Blue Valley | 2022 State #40 Nation KS will lead scorers on the Kansas side of the city with 20 points per game. The Mizzou commit will have a tough road ahead as the 11 seed in sub-state.
Bishop Ward forward leads in rebounds:
Daniel Brown, a 6-foot-2 senior at Bishop Ward is leading the Kansas side of the city in rebounds with over 10 per game. His club finished 15-4 and grab an enviable #3 seed in the West Franklin sub-state.
Heritage Christian guard leads in assists:
Owen Evans Owen Evans 6'1" | SG Heritage Christian Academy | 2023 KS , a 6-foot-1 junior who has thus far escaped the notice of Prep Hoops rankers, appears to be leading all of Kansas City in assists, with more than 7 per game. His Heritage Christian club is seeded fifth in their sub-state at West Franklin. They will start with a tough Wellsville opponent.
