Continue ReadingThis week, I saw two high-level basketball matchups featuring some of the top talents in the Wabash Valley. On Tuesday night, I saw Shakamak go on the road and take down a young West Vigo squad, 61-43. Then, on Wednesday, Sullivan went on the road to North Daviess in one of the best games in the state featuring the #3 team in 3A and the #1 team in 1A. Sullivan controlled it early, but North Daviess came back and took control in the fourth quarter. However, Randy Kelley Randy Kelley 6'0" | PG Sullivan | 2022 State IN tied it up with a pull-up three with 3.6 seconds to go and sent the game to overtime. North Daviess would hold on in the best game that I have seen all season. Now, let’s take a look at the best players in these two games.
Player Evaluations
Coy Gilbert Coy Gilbert 6'3" | SG Shakamak | 2022 State IN (Shakamak) – 6’2” SG 2022
Gilbert is an outstanding senior guard who has continued to grow and develop his game over the last four years. He is a scorer on all levels, and he does whatever his team needs from him. Gilbert showed off a nice array of post-moves inside, a solid three-point stroke, and a confidence that is unmatched. He is also extremely aggressive on the boards, and he seemed to out-jump most other players. Gilbert would end with 29 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 assists. If a college coach is looking for a player to take a flyer on, there are few that I would fight for more than Gilbert.
Jackson Hills Jackson Hills 6'5" | PF Sullivan | 2022 State IN (Sullivan) – 6’5” PF 2022
Hills is a big power forward inside who showed off his post moves big time in this one. North Daviess did not have anyone near the size of Hills, and it showed as he seemed to score on every touch in the post. He would end with 24 points and 7 rebounds on 11-17 shooting in this one. Hills did struggle big time on the defensive end of the floor against the smaller forwards of the Cougars. They were able to make a run in the second half by attacking him off the dribble. He will need to be better in this facet if Sullivan wants the win.
J.T. May J.T. May 6'0" | SG Shakamak | 2024 IN (Shakamak) – 2024
May, like his teammate Gilbert, has really come into his own and developed well this season. He is still best at the catch-and-shoot three-point shot, but he has shown the ability to create as well. He is smooth around the rim and can finish well in transition. A couple of other things that you love to see from the young May is his ability to handle pressure with the ball and the fact that he is always hustling. He will be a player to keep an eye on and could put up big numbers when he is the top guy next year. He ended with 19 points and 9 boards in their win.
Jaylen Mullen Jaylen Mullen 6'0" | PG North Daviess | 2023 State IN (North Daviess) – 6’0” PG 2023
Mullen is one of the top 1A scorers in the state, and that is a big reason why North Daviess is up to #1. He has a nice pull-up jumper, three-point stroke, and a smooth floater. Mullen was ridiculously hot in the first half with 17 points at the break, and he would end with 25 in the win on 9-12 shooting. Mullen should be playing NAIA basketball when it is all said and done.
Randy Kelley Randy Kelley 6'0" | PG Sullivan | 2022 State IN (Sullivan) – 5’11” PG 2022
Kelley is a quick guard who struggled scoring in this one, but he came up huge late for the Arrows. He is strong with the ball and has an incredibly high basketball IQ. This coupled with his aggressiveness on the defensive end and his ability to cut to open spaces makes him a fun player to watch. He struggled early, but he hit some big free throws down the stretch and a game-tying three with just 3 seconds left to send the game to overtime. Kelley should be a solid Division 3 guard next season.
Zeke Tanoos Zeke Tanoos 6'4" | SG West Vigo | 2024 State IN (West Vigo) – 2024
Tanoos is a young guard who struggled mightily from the field in this one, but you can see the potential that he has. He always looks to attack rather than settle for threes, but he needs to slow the game down and not force tough shots. Tanoos has a ton of athleticism, but it seemed he was just a little impatient rather than letting the game come to him. He will be one to watch in the future, especially if he can begin to play with more control.
