Hayfield (VA)
Rank: #11
Record: 21-0
The Hawks have passed every test they’ve faced so far this season. They comprehensively beat Bishop Ireton on the road to start the season, and recently defeated perennial Richmond powerhouse, John Marshall, at Virginia State. Balance is key for this group. All five starters routinely hit double-figures. Their sixth man, 2022 Markus Rouse, is a very versatile player who is an indispensable part of the rotation primarily because of his lockdown defense. Falls Church is their final regular-season opponent. Hayfield hosted the Jaguars in January and beat them by 22 points. We’ll see if they can complete the perfect regular season with another positive result. Win or loss on Friday, the Hawks will be considered one of the favorites for the 6A title.
Churchill (MD)
Rank: #12
Record: 16-0
The Bulldogs have emerged as a powerhouse in Montgomery County. 2022 Andrew Silver Andrew Silver 5'10" | PG Churchill | 2022 State MD popped on our radar during the pandemic. He continues to play an important role for his team. Churchill has added a pair of transfers, 2023’s Tre Stott Tre Stott 6'5" | SG National Christian White | 2023 State MD and Ezekiel Avit Ezekiel Avit 6'3" | SF Churchill | 2023 MD , who are making a tremendous impact. Stott is a top-ten scorer in the DC Metro Area. He is averaging just north of 17 points per game. Avit jumped off the page almost immediately in his debut this season. He is averaging close to 13 points per game. Churchill will face B-CC tonight in an anticipated rematch. If they can get through this game, odds are in their favor to finish the regular season unbeaten.
Bowie (MD)
Rank: #14
Record: 11-0
Coach Price has the Bulldogs off to a perfect start. They’ve scored impressive wins over respected county foes Douglass and Wise. Their lead guard, 2022 Jacob Morgan, is a tremendous player. He manufactures offense with relative ease off the dribble and is no slouch defensively. Bowie is one of the surprise teams of the season. Expect the defense to be their calling card as they look to make a deep postseason run.
Patriot (VA)
Rank: #15
Record: 20-0
The Pioneers completed the regular season unbeaten with a win over Champe last night. This team has a lot of moxie and should be considered a legitimate threat to win the state title. 2023 Jay Randall brings relentless energy on both ends from start to finish. Defensively, they are solid as a group in part because of Randall’s versatility. Another defensive ace on this squad is 2022 Courtney Davis. He will guard whoever the best player is on the opposing team, likely to great effect. This team also has plenty of fire-power. 2023 Nasir Coleman is a dynamic playmaker on the ball who is lightning quick. They’ve got a knockdown shooter in 2022 Nick Marrero, and a microwave scorer in 2024 Dezmond Hopkins.
Parkville (MD)
Rank: #16
Record: 17-0
Our guy Colby Giacubeno tabbed Parkville as a contender in the preseason. His prediction was spot on. Unsigned gem Dorian Jones Dorian Jones 6'2" | PG Parkville | 2022 State MD has been a revelation for the Knights. He dropped 33 points in a recent road win at Towson. Jones combines with outstanding sophomore Sincere Barfield Sincere Barfield 5'11" | PG Patterson | 2024 State MD to form a dynamic duo. Perhaps as dynamic as any you’ll find in the MPSSAA. Don’t be surprised if the Knights march all the way to Xfinity.
Atholton (MD)
Rank: #18
Record: 11-0
Atholton is currently the team to beat in Howard County. 2022 dynamo Ayubb Rabb has been a consistent producer for the Raiders. Atholton will travel to 10-1 Marriott’s Ridge tonight. The winner of that game will likely be considered the cream of the crop in HoCo.
