Continue ReadingThe SOC Wireless Classic at Waverly High School was a great opportunity to see some of the top talent that southeast Ohio has to offer. In a five-game event, many of the top teams in the region were featured. In this article, I’ll be breaking down the top 2022 performers from the event.
Trey Robertson Trey Robertson 5'10" | PG Waverly | 2022 State OH , 5’10 PG Waverly 2022: Robertson and the host Waverly Tigers gave unbeaten Upper Arlington all they could handle for 3.5 quarters. Robertson was tough to contain for the UA defense, as his ability to stop and start had defenders on their heels all game. Robertson was showing more ability to get into the paint and score with jump-stop finishes from the 5–7-foot range, an area where Robertson will have to live at the next level. A terrific shooter, you can tell Robertson has taken thousands of the shots that he makes in the game. One of the best players in all of southeast Ohio, Robertson should be on all Division II radars for teams needing a PG in the class of 2022.
Quinn Corna Quinn Corna 6'3" | SG Upper Arlington | 2022 State OH , 6’3 SG Upper Arlington 2022: I caught two Golden Bears contests this week and, in both games, Corna led his team in scoring. Corna is shooting the ball at a high level including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the first quarter in this game that gave UA some needed momentum. Corna works well off ball in a pass first system that UA has been running for years. Corna can score it in a variety of ways and picks his spots well, I expect Corna to be highly pursued by Division III programs around the state.
Nick Heath Nick Heath 6'4" | SF Upper Arlington | 2022 State OH , 6’4 SF Upper Arlington 2022: In my opinion, Heath is one of the most underrated players in the state. Heath is a solid athlete at the wing position with a solid 3-point shot and the ability to put the ball on the floor with the strength to finish at the basket. Heath impressed me in both games I saw of him this week. With Corna and Heath, Upper Arlington is a team to watch in Division I as they remain unbeaten.
DeSean Branson DeSean Branson 6'2" | SG Unioto | 2022 State OH , 6’2 SG Unioto 2022: Branson was the most athletic player on the court for Unioto’s battle with Gallia Academy as no Blue Devil defender could stay in front of him in the second half. Branson doesn’t shoot it from the outside very often but was resilient in getting to the paint whenever he wanted. One of the top players in the SVC, Branson will look to lead Unioto to a conference championship this season.
Reico Colter, 5’9 PG Washington Court House 2022: Colter and the Blue Lions upset Division II powerhouse Jonathan Alder due to shot making at key stages and getting stops when they needed them. Colter was a key for both of these aspects. On the offensive end, Colter was making a lot of shots in the 8–12-foot range with the occasional drive all the way to the basket. However, where Colter made his mark was on the defensive end of the floor. Colter was looking to pickpocket the opposing ball-handler whenever he saw an opportunity and stole it on numerous occasions from unsuspecting Alder guards. This is a big win for the FAC squad as southeast Ohio looks to gain some more respect statewide.
