SANTA ANA, Ca—The XXVII annual Nike Extravaganza is one of the best stops on the scouting tour. Two powerhouses in their respective areas went head-to-head when Etiwanda and Durango (NV) squared off. However, the Trailblazers of Durango “blazed” their way to a surprisingly easy victory over the Eagles of Etiwanda 58-44. Super sophomore Taj DeGourville Taj DeGourville 6'4" | SF Red Rock Academy | 2024 State #203 Nation NV tossed in 30-points for Durango and he executed it in a variety of ways.
Star of the night
Taj DeGourville Taj DeGourville 6'4" | SF Red Rock Academy | 2024 State #203 Nation NV (Durango)
2024, G, 6-foot-4, 210 pounds
Joel’s Take: Degourville reminds me a bit of another physical wing who resided in Las Vegas and is now at UCLA—Will McClendon. Degourville scored in a variety of ways and pretty much got to where ever he wanted to go against Etiwanda. He has a low release on his shot, but he gets it off quick. His strength is impressive as he wards off defenders with ease and can finish through contact.
Best Prospect
Curtis Williams Curtis Williams 6'6" | SF Etiwanda | 2023 State #159 Nation CA-S (Etiwanda)
2023, WF, 6-foot-6, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: Williams is one of the fastest rising prospects out west. He appeared to be disengaged at times in this one, but he still showed his vast potential. His willowy frame should continue to fill out and his skill set should continue to evolve. His shot is dependable off the catch or off the dribble and he has improved his triple-threat game. He can slither inside off the dribble, but he needs to get stronger to finish through contact.
Youthful backcourt
Mason Brown Mason Brown 6'1" | PG Durango | 2025 CA-S (Durango)
2025, G, 6-foot-1, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: Brown is a wiry guard (slim frame) who plays with a grip of moxie. Despite his youth, he has a good feel for the game and generally makes good decisions. He shows a soft touch that extends out to the stripe and he can toss in a runner as well.
Jevon Yepi (Durango)
2025, PG, 6-foot, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: Yepi is a very quick point guard who pushes the ball very well in transition and can get into the rim. He has a slick handle which includes a tight crossover and his vision while attacking. In addition, he showed a tight release on his jump shot and he has a nice lift on it. With his speed, ball handling, vision, and touch Yepi will be a fun player to watch in the coming years.
Mr. Glue Type
Tylen Riley Tylen Riley 6'2" | CG Durango | 2023 State NV (Durango)
2023, G, 6-foot-2, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: Every team needs a glue guy and Riley is that player. He has a nice lengthy frame with long arms and he plays hard at both ends. He can face up and slash his way to the basket and finish through contact. Defensively, his long arms, active hands, and excellent lateral quickness cause havoc for opponents.
The Next Step
Jimmy Baker Jimmy Baker 6'2" | PG Etiwanda | 2023 State CA-S (Etiwanda)
2023, PG, 6-foot, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Baker has the size, strength, and quickness to be a Divison 1 guard. He is quite potent attacking the rim and his ability to attack with his left is uncanny. He can finish in the paint and has excellent body control. Defensively, he slides his feet well and has active hands. However, the trajectory of his career will depend on the improvement of his jump shot.
