One of my favorite events of the year, the CHC is in remembrance of Chance Harmon, who at 8 years old passed away from a rare cancer and this event honors him while also raising money for child cancer research.
The event brings the whole town out as well as most of western VA, and is a really special day of basketball run by some very good people. There were tons of talented players and great basketball throughout the day, and it was another successful year to help “Give Others a Chance.”
Here’s a look at part three of the 2023 standouts from the event.
Nick Owen | 6’0” CG | North Cross
Owen is a name to watch in the Roanoke area as he had a breakout performance in their close win over Auburn. The 6’0” combo guard showed good craft off the bounce, is an absolute dead eye shooter from deep with good range and ability to make shots off the catch and off the bounce and he came through time and time again when his team needed him to. He finished with 29 points in the win and hit 7 three-pointers.
Gabe Cupps Gabe Cupps 6'1" | PG Centerville | 2023 State #80 Nation OH | 6’0” PG | Centerville
Cupps is coming off of a huge summer with Midwest Basketball Club that saw him commit to Indiana, and he showed why as he absolutely controlled the game from every aspect and was a big reason that Centerville was able to convincingly beat a very good Blue Ridge team. He’s the type of point guard that is always in control and never gets sped up, he picks his spots and scores it efficiently from multiple levels and he sets guys up easily for baskets while also setting the tone defensively. He finished with 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field and had 8 assists to just 2 turnovers.
Emmanuel Deng Emmanuel Deng 6'2" | SG Centerville | 2023 State OH | 6’2” WG | Centerville
While there are some bigger names on this talented Centerville team, Deng’s energy on both ends of the floor was a major key in them getting out to an early lead and keeping it as well. The 6’2” wing has good length and was all over the place on their press, he moved off the ball nonstop and cut with aggression getting him some easy buckets and made all the hustle plays for them throughout the game. He finished with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field.
Mayar Wol Mayar Wol 6'8" | SF Word of God | 2023 State #157 Nation NC | 6’9” PF | Moravian Prep
Wol is a prospect who really impressed me this summer with Team Loaded NC, and he showed the tools that I loved and was very efficient for Moravian in their win over VES. The 6’9” forward is a unique prospect as he has terrific ball skills and is comfortable on the perimeter where he shoots it well, he can attack the basketball and he has the length and mobility to guard multiple positions on the defensive end. He finished with 14 points going 3-for-6 from deep and pitched in 5 rebounds and 3 steals as well.
Hamilton Campbell Hamilton Campbell 6'0" | PG Moravian Prep | 2022 NC | 6’0” PG | Moravian Prep
It was a homecoming of sorts for Campbell who hails from SWVA, and while he didn’t score it that well he did exactly what he does best as he put on a passing clinic and set up players nicely throughout the game. He’s a natural leader and competitor who brings it on both ends of the floor, he has terrific vision and feel to see the rotations on defense and make pin point passes and he adds a little bit of flair to his game to make him fun to watch. He had 8 assists to just 3 turnovers in their win.
