The big time names came out to play and I had the ability to watch the Junction City and Topeka High game in person which was a great atmosphere for hoops. Let’s round out the notables from a jam packed December 7th.
Junction City 80- Topeka High 53
Top Performers
Howard Johnson Howard Johnson 6'0" | SG Junction City | 2022 State KS , 6’1 G, Junction City, 2022: Set the tone early and often for the Blue Jays continuing his scoring tear from game one, dropping 13 in the opening frame against Topeka High and finishing with a game high 28 points in the game. Had the arsenal going, hit a couple of 3’s, had a nice pull up jumper off a shot fake, converted on multiple and 1’s off drives, and even snuck in a fast break dunk. Johnson sits at a 30 ppg average through the first 2 games.
BJ Canady BJ Canady 6'5" | PF Topeka High | 2024 KS , 6’6 F, Topeka High, 2024: The young forward had a great 2nd and 3rd quarter to keep Topeka High in striking distance for as long as possible. Had a couple of great hi low plays especially from passing to seals, had a great play handling the ball in transition and finishing off a spin move, and drew a ton of shooting fouls off of his physicality and effort. Had a personal 7-2 run in the second quarter to close the half that was huge in getting some momentum for the Trojans.
Intriguing Names
Sheldon Butler-Lawson Sheldon Butler-Lawson 6'1" | CG Junction City Highschool | 2023 KS , 6’3 G, Junction City, 2023: Butler-Lawson had a really strong performance especially in the second half. He showed that he could pose a matchup problem for teams like he did Topeka High who mixed his defenders up from guards and bigs. Butler-Lawson made a ton of plays passing the ball and getting teammates great shots, attacked bigs off the dribble and finished at a high clip, and shows loads of potential.
Matt Flenoy, 6’6 F, Topeka High, 2022: Flenoy and Canady make up a really solid 4/5 tandem for Topeka High. Both of their physical presence and efforts on the glass really kept Topeka High in the ball game in the first half. Flenoy was flying to the offensive glass, sealed really well up the lane in high low situations, and finished pretty well in the painted area, including a massive two handed dunk.
Solid Performances
Seth Clark Seth Clark 6'2" | SG Junction City | 2022 State KS , 6’2 G, Junction City, 2022
Terrence Tedder Jr Terrence Tedder Jr 6'0" | SG Junction City | 2022 State KS , 6’ PG, Junction City, 2022
Germane Mays, 6’5 F, Topeka High, 2022
Other Top Performances on the Night
Trevor Mcbride Trevor Mcbride 6'2" | CG Basehor Linwood | 2022 State KS , 6’2 PG, Basehor Linwood, 2022: Got rolling in game two with a double double performance in a nice win for the Bobcats. Teammate Carter Bergman Carter Bergman 6'1" | SG Basehor-Linwood | 2022 State KS had a 22 point outing in the game as well and McBride showed his PG savvy by getting him some great shots en route to his 10 assist performance. McBride’s balance of attacking and being aggressive on the offensive end and getting teammates involved is a great trait.
Eli Sawyers Eli Sawyers 6'7" | SF Southeast Of Saline | 2023 State KS , 6’5 W/F, Southeast of Saline, 2023: Had a 31 point outing in a win against Smokey Valley. Was really dominant in every area of the game on offense, getting out in transition, playing with the ball in his hands in the half court, finished up and around the rim, and was very efficient in his attack.
David Cobin David Cobin 5'10" | PG De Soto | 2024 State #285 Nation KS , 5’10 PG, De Soto, 2024: One of the names I was really happy to see back on the court for the winter season as his great summer was cut short with a pretty bad elbow/shoulder injury. Great kid off the court and young point guard on it. Cobin went off for 26 points last night and dominated the game from the back court with his defensive pressure as well.
