There were certainly some strong teams at the event. I was able to attend the tournament the final two days (12/22 and 12/23) and here’s a look at some of the top talent that I saw.
1. David Mack – Fairfax 2024
Mack is one of the better point guards that I’ve seen this season so far. He does a very good job controlling the pace and running the offense in halfcourt sets. He’s a solid ball-handler who can dribble under duress and he finds the seams in the defense to get to the rim. He has good body control and can absorb contact at the rim to get himself to the free-throw line. He also has a nice pull-up jumper in transition.
2. Gabriel Cummings Gabriel Cummings 6'2" | SG Long Beach Poly | 2022 State CA-S – Long Beach Poly 2022
Cummings is one the best shooters I’ve seen in the LA area. He does a great job moving without the ball and getting himself free for an open shoot. Very good catch and shoot player. He has a quick release and can shoot with defenders closing out on him and he can pull-up from three in transition. Can draw fouls on his shots. With the ball in his hands, he create space with his dribbles and get good looks in the midrange.
3. Jeremy Dent-Smith Jeremy Dent-Smith 6'0" | PG Gardena Serra | 2022 CA-S – Serra 2022
Dent-Smith was another solid point guard. He has the ability to put up points, but he really is a pass first guard who does a solid job finding open teammates. He’s a very good ball-handler who can dribble under pressure. Strong court vision; especially in the half court. He can attack off the dribble and he finishes strong at the rim through traffic. Good shooter from the perimeter. He crashes the glass well and he is a solid defensive player.
4. Dillon Botts – Mayfair 2022
Botts stood out for his scoring ability. He’s a natural scoring wing who is comfortable with the ball in his hands and making plays. In the halfcourt, he has a solid pull-up jumper off the dribble. He runs the floor well in transition and he can finish strong at the rim. Good hesitation moves to beat his defender off the dribble and get to the rim. He’s got a little playmaking to his game as well and he is a solid defensive player on the wings.
