The 2022 point guard crop is filled with talent as under the radar floor generals are looking to break out. Here are the under the radar 2022 point guards that are set to break out.
Yathin Vemula Yathin Vemula 6'0" | PG South Brunswick | 2022 State NJ , 6’0 South Brunswick
Vemula has been a key part of the Vikings’ offense over the last couple of seasons, but is ready for a leading role in his senior campaign. The 6’0 guard is not afraid of the big moment as he hit the game-winning layup in the 2020 Central Jersey Group 4 final. Vemula has a nice handle and does not force the issue in the half court. He moves his feet well on the offensive end and does not waste a lot of motion in his shooting form. Vemula’s ability to come up big in clutch situations is something that will help his stock in a big way this season.
Josiah Brown Josiah Brown 5'8" | PG New Brunswick | 2022 State NJ , 5’8 New Brunswick
Brown returns to run the Zebras’ offense and is set for a big 2021-22 season. The 5’8 guard is lighting quick with the ball in his hands, which makes it hard for defenders to stay in front of him. Brown is a good finisher around the basket and does not mind drawing contact. He plays with quick hands on the defensive end and is an underrated passer. Brown’s ability to make plays in the lane is key as he looks to lead New Brunswick deep into the state tournament.
Aaron Jones Aaron Jones 5'9" | PG Peddie | 2022 State NJ , 5’9 Peddie
The Falcons have a solid group of guards, including Jones. The 5’9 guard is a marksman from deep as he has a quick release on his jumper and can knock down triples in bunches. Jones can shoot either off the dribble or catch and rarely forces shots in the half court. He has an underrated handle and makes good decisions with the ball in his hands. Jones’ shooting will help his stock in a big way as the season progresses for Peddie.
Tommy Mooney Tommy Mooney 6'1" | PG Haddonfield | 2022 State NJ , 6’1 Haddonfield
Mooney has been a consistent part of Haddonfield’s offense over the past two seasons and should get a larger role this season. The 6’1 guard has a nice release on his jumper and shoots the ball with confidence from deep. Mooney is more than just a shooter as he can also put the ball on the floor and makes plays in the lane. He plays with quick hands on the defensive end and is an underrated rebounder. Mooney is set to run the offense for Haddonfield as he looks to lead the team back to the sectional final.
Jordan Lomax Jordan Lomax 5'10" | PG Pemberton | 2022 State NJ , 5’10 Pemberton
Pemberton had a bounce back 2020-21 campaign and Lomax was a big reason why. The 5’10 guard plays with composure on the ball and did not get sped up by on-ball pressure. Lomax has a good handle, which he uses to get into the lane and create for others. He is a pesky on-ball defender and can hit open jumpers from the perimeter. Lomax’s unselfish play is something that will be key for Pemberton as the Hornets look to maintain their form from last season.
