Hayfield was crowned the champion after defeating Fairfax Christian in a thrilling championship game.
Here’s a look at part two of the many 2023 standouts from the event. If you’re interested in watching the Finale in full, you can see the games on the CBG Live Network.
Etienne Strothers Etienne Strothers 6'1" | PG Menchville | 2023 State VA | 6’0” PG | Menchville
Strothers is set for a breakout year if what he showed during the Fall Series is just a hint of what he can do, as he’s one of the most all-around and talented guards in the 757. He’s excellent on the ball as he’s crafty and has great vision and feel, he can score it from all three levels off the bounce and he has a mix of skill and athleticism that makes him tough to guard. He is the leader of the group and is starting to learn how to make the game easier for himself and others.
AJ Clark AJ Clark 6'2" | SG Menchville | 2023 State VA | 6’3” CG | Menchville
Clark is a player who continues to turn heads for scouts and coaches and looks like he’ll be one of the most improved players in the 757, if not in the state. He’s an explosive athlete who uses his athleticism to play above the rim on both ends of the floor, he thrives in transition with his ability to get downhill and finish above the rim and he’s a lock down defender who can guard on the ball and is excellent in help side too. He continues to improve his shot making ability and that will make him very intriguing to college coaches moving forward.
Joe Baldwin Joe Baldwin 6'7" | SF Fairfax Christian | 2023 State VA | 6’6” WF | Fairfax Christian
Baldwin is the type of player who may get overshadowed on such a talented and deep team like Fairfax Christian, but don’t get it twisted he’s a very intriguing prospect who has a college ready frame now and still has a lot of room to get better. He’s a big wing with good athleticism that is capable of making highlight reel plays on both ends of the floor, he’s improving in his ability to catch and shoot from deep and he plays with a good motor. He showed a lot during their run to the championship and should start to see coaches get involved with him soon.
Kris Mickens Kris Mickens 6'5" | CG National Christian Academy | 2023 State MD | 6’3” CG | Fairfax Christian
Mickens is another very intriguing prospect who used the CBG platform to make a name for himself and prove that he’s also a prospect who deserves more attention from division one coaches moving forward. A big guard who can play on or off the basketball, Mickens is a natural athlete who can play above the rim and guard multiple positions, he’s improved as a shot maker and creator and he’s also just scratching the surface with how good he’ll be. He’s another reason Fairfax Christian is the favorite to win the VISAA D3 State Championship this year.
Desmond Roberts Desmond Roberts 6'5" | SF St Anne’s Belfield | 2023 State VA | 6’5” F | Virginia Episcopal School
Roberts is arguably the most underrated 2023 recruit in the state as the 6’5” combo forward continues to improve and be productive, and he was fantastic in the Finale as he led VES in scoring and likely in rebounds. A super high motor forward with explosive bounce, he thrives as he can get up and down and play above the rim, he’s an excellent rebounder and he’s shown improvement in his ability to play on the ball and make shots from deep as well. He’s set to have a breakout season for VES and on the CBG platform against some high level competition he absolutely shined.
Efe Sekeroglu | 6’10” C | Virginia Episcopal School
Sekeroglu is a new name for VES as the Serbian big man is in his first year in the states and he shows a lot of potential and skill for a big of his age. He’s somewhat of a throwback style big as he has excellent back to the basket moves and is able to finish over defenders with both hands, but he also has that euro style where he’s comfortable stepping out and is a good passer and shooter as well. He’s a player we have to see a little more but he had no problem against some very good teams on Saturday.
