Continue ReadingThroughout this month, I will be highlighting selected teams across South Florida. This article takes me North Broward Prep. The Coconut Creek program went 14-7 under head coach Casey Wohlleb. 2021’s MK Ashmore MK Ashmore 6'6" | SF North Broward Prep | 2021 State FL and Arthur Frigo are key departures.
The Eagles are led by preseason county pick Justin Abson Justin Abson 6'9" | PF North Broward Prep | 2022 State #230 Nation FL . The 6-foot-9 2022 forward averaged 16.8 points, 13 rebounds and 3.2 blocks while shooting 55 percent from the field. Abson is a smooth offensive player with his back to the basket. On defense, he plays with great awareness and timing to grab rebounds and block shots. He is set to make his D-1 commitment on Halloween night. 2022 Maximus Fuentes Maximus Fuentes 6'2" | CG North Broward Prep | 2022 State FL is an underrated combo guard. The 6-foot-3 prospect averaged 12.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.8 steals while shooting 51 percent from the floor. Fuentes’ efficiency was second-best on the team (min. 60 attempts). He has a big wingspan (6’9) to disrupt passing lanes and create turnovers.
Right behind Fuentes in scoring was Guilherme Tesch Guilherme Tesch 6'8" | SF North Broward Prep | 2023 FL (12.6 ppg). The 6-foot-8 forward provides North Broward Prep with length and shooting ability out to the 3-point line. He should also grab six-eight boards per night. You partner him with Abson in the frontcourt and North Broward Prep has a “no-fly” zone on defense. Tesch is a sneaky pick to make an all-county postseason list.
Newcomers Adren Roberts Adren Roberts 6'5" | SG Somerset Canyons | 2022 State FL (Somerset Academy – Canyons) and point guard Michael Kalina Michael Kalina 6'0" | PG North Broward Prep | 2022 State FL (Boca Raton) provide added depth to what was already a quality group. The 6-foot-5 Roberts improved over the summer with team Judah Nation. He should fit in nicely as a shooting guard/small forward. The 6-foot-1 Kalina averaged 14.2 points and five rebounds while shooting 45 percent from the field with the Bobcats. He’s a smart kid with an opportunity to challenge himself at his new home. 2023 Ben Daniels is a threat from deep after knocking down 18 3-pointers at a 37 percent clip. That efficiency mark is best among returnees. Wohlleb also mentioned 2025 Jack Wigginton as a player to watch.
Last season’s 14-7 record is very deceiving. North Broward Prep lost three games to 4A state champion Pine Crest and one game to 3A state champion Calvary Christian. They also fell to 2A finalist Grandview Prep, Florida Christian, and Westminster Academy. Those are quality opponents if we convert this to strength of schedule. A “lighter” slate and this team wins close to 20 games. While every season is different, North Broward Prep should be “battle tested”. I think the Eagles are a top 5 team in Broward County heading into the season.
