McGill-Toolen saw their season end last year in the sub-state game against local rival Spanish Fort. Spanish Fort went on to make it to the championship game, where they lost to Mountain Brook. The loss for McGill-Toolen and Head Coach Phillip Murphy has lit a fire under his team, and they cannot wait to get the season started as they have set their eyes on Birmingham. His team is experienced as they have 7 seniors who have been playing together for a long time, which he believes will pay off for them this year.
Coach believes his team is tougher mentally and physically and is excited to see how they will compete against some early-season powerhouse teams. When you look at McGill’s schedule, you see a team that better be ready night in and night out for high-level competition. Here are some match-ups to watch and see how McGill will play.
Key Early Season Match-Ups:
Nov. 11 vs Baker (Home)
Nov. 27 vs Tupelo (Lighthouse Classic)
Dec. 18 vs Hoover (at Hoover)
Coach is really excited about his players and the unselfishness that he has seen from his team during the pre-season. He sees a unique coming together of his team as they are in sync with one another. He is excited about the early commitment that he sees from his guys on the defensive end of the court. I asked Coach what is it going to take night in and night out from his team to give them a chance to win it all, and his response was simple as he said,
“I hate to be old school, but we are going to have to defend and rebound.”
After coming off a year that he feels as though his team wasn’t very good defensively, he believes this year’s team will be one that will consistently defend at a high level in the half-court!
