Continue ReadingThe Great Western Classic is always one of the marquee events of the Fall. Hosted by recruiting legend Tim Davis, the event featured teams from Utah and around the Western Region. The age groups range from 3rd grade through Varsity Level. This year’s event ran from October 7th through October 9th and was held in the Salt Lake area, with several venues hosting, including Lehi, American Fork, and Juan Diego. Several players with local ties showed up and showed out. In this article, we take a look at some local standouts from the event.
Cory Curtis 6’3 SG ABC Prep (featured image) – The Las Vegas transfer ran with ABC Prep and did it on both ends. He was able to defend both backcourt positions, causing havoc with steals and deflections. He did a good job battling for in traffic rebounds, as well as finishing through contact.
Jose Murillo Jose Murillo 6'8" | C Highland | 2022 State NM 6’9 C ABC Prep 2022 (#5PHNM 2022) – Murrilo was a monster, who enjoyed a coming-out party this weekend. The athletic center was a terror around the basket, blocking shots and rebounding in volume. He’s a catch and finisher with good hands and explosive first jump ability, that may have played himself from a D2 to low major prospect.
Tainui Taiaroa Tainui Taiaroa 6'6" | SF ABC Prep | 2023 State NM 6’5 SF ABC Prep 2022 (#6PHNM 2022) – Taiora is going to make my “Good At Every” team. He showed that he was a capable defender, shooter, and playmaker for his squad. His shooting allowed the floor to stay spaced for Murrillo, and his size allowed him to help his squad on the backboards.
Emeka Ceaser Emeka Ceaser 5'11" | SG Centennial | 2022 State NV 5’10 CG Centennial 2022 (#47PHN 2022) – Ceaser was all over the court. He was relentless on the defensive end, hounding opponents in the game I saw. When he got his hands on the ball, he was able to turn defense into offense, getting out ahead in transition.
Toby Roberts Toby Roberts 6'4" | SG Centennial | 2023 State NV 6’3 SG Centennial 2023 – Roberts gets it done with his unconventional game. He was all arms, legs, and hair, getting steals, slashing to the rim, and hitting his trademark pull-up jumper. He is part of a tough 1-2 punch for the Bulldogs.
Chase Jackson Chase Jackson 6'8" | C Centennial | 2023 State NV 6’8 C Centennial 2023 (#12PHN 2022) – Jackson looks like he’s been working on his game. He has developed a nice over the left shoulder jump hook. He had a stretch where he made 3 of them in a row in the game I watched. He did a good job of rebounding the ball, using his length to snag boards off the glass in traffic.
