is the man that kicks things off. On Wednesday the strong 6-foot-10 post from Wilsonville made the decision to commit to OIT and it was a long time coming. The Hustlin’ Owls were the first to offer him a scholarship and the first to host him on an official visit. So when it came down to it for Thebiay, there really wasn’t anywhere else he wanted to be.
“After thinking about it for a while after the visit, it felt like a great for me academically as well with the basketball program,” Thebiay said. “I love the campus – it’s really nice. The coaching staff is really nice and they remind me of Coach (Roche).”
Of course, the pipeline from Wilsonville to Klamath Falls played a factor as former teammate Keegan Shivers Keegan Shivers 6'4" | SF Wilsonville | 2020 State OR is currently at OIT. Thebiay also noted that he knows current Owl Matt Van Tassell who played with his older brother. He earned the offer from OIT after putting together a solid junior campaign in 2021 and then playing AAU this summer with International Elite. He was grateful for the experience playing club basketball.
“It was a great experience and I got some good exposure,” Thebiay said. “It felt good to knock around some big guys. The offense was a little bit different than what we do here but I got used to it.”
Thebiay had also earned some Division I interest from schools such as Idaho State and UC Irvine but in the end, OIT was the best fit for him. With his decision in the books, the big man who can run the floor, really hit the boards, and knock down face-up jumpers out to three-point range is to his senior campaign.
“I can’t wait,” Thebiay said. “It’s going to be a great season.”
Thebiay currently ranks as the #16 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings.
