Here we’ll take a look at some of the most impressive pick-and-roll players of them all both offensively and defensively.
Kaleb Banks | Small Forward | Fayette County HS | C/o ’22
Kaleb Banks excelled and did a great job of using his athleticism in the pick-and-roll scenarios, usually going up high to catch the ball out of the screen over defenders before finishing at the rim with one of his many high flying slam dunks. This 6-foot-8-inch dynamic forward was a relentless leaper and a consistent abuser of the rim. Anytime the paint was left wide-open, Banks made sure to throw down a mean one on every single occasion.
Nicholas Gunter | Forward | O.D. Wyatt HS | C/o ’23
Fort Worth’s very own, Nicholas Gunter, stood out during pick and roll drills with the way he defended the play. Extremely impressive at baiting or forcing guys into taking long mid-range jumpshots as well as off-balance pull-up jumpers. Gunter had a unique way of using his length and lateral speed to shut off multiple areas on the court. The 6-foot-9 junior covered ground quick enough to get from each side of the basket using his strides as an advantage to protect the rim and contest every shot he could, completely shutting off the paint with his great motor and terrific instincts.
John Bol | Center | CBC | C/o ’24
John Bol is every coach’s dream at the center position. His measurements are out of this world, phenomenal size and length standing at an enormous 7-foot-2-inches, Bol displayed a supermassive standing reach along with an incredibly wide wingspan. John Bol utilized his reach and active hands as a threat to every throw in the passing lane, often resulting in tipped, defected, or stolen passes.
Jaye Nash | Point Guard | Briarcrest Christian School | C/o ’24
Elite handle, ambidextrous with the rock, and well equipped with fantastic ball speed which made a killer out of Jaye Nash in the pick and roll, splitting double teams, blowing by the defense off the screen, and getting to the basket at will. Nash displayed a special burst of quickness each time he attacked, often getting to the rim with a limited number of dribbles from the perimeter. Once inside, this young man did an outstanding job of protecting the ball and keeping the defense out of his space with his off-hand or leading them away from the rim before hitting his man down low. Jaye Nash got whatever he wanted off the bounce whether it was an assist or a bucket he always proved to be an intelligent decision-maker with the ball in his hands.
Machi Chester | Point Guard | Bishop O’Connell HS | C/o ’24
6-foot-3-inch, Machi Chester fought over screens and hassled guards cutting every angle and shutting off any view of the basket and the ball handler’s rolling man. A truly bothersome defender who instinctually utilized his frame, quickness, strength, and nose for the ball to crowd the dribbler’s space, causing them to think twice or force bad passes on a consistent basis.
