This article highlights five players who consistently made plays and stood out above the rest in the games I was able to watch on Day 1.
Xavier Miller | 6’1″ SG | Top Achievers Elite 2023 (2024)
- Miller showed out in the opening game of the tournament, scoring 22 points and hitting 6 three-pointers in TA Elite’s 72-62 win over EP Matrix. Miller caught fire in the first half from the left-wing, nailing three deep range shots in a row to give his team much-needed momentum. He displayed some serious shooting range in the game and also did a good job of making the right decisions with the ball in his hands and delivering crisp passes to teammates.
Enrique Salmon | 5’11” SG | EP Matrix 2023 (2023)
- Salmon was money from three-point range in EP Matrix’s first game of the tournament, hitting 8-of-11 shots from deep, and was the leading scorer of the game with 24 points. He didn’t need much room to get his shot up, and it was nothing but net for each three he connected on. Salmon was the most lethal from the wings but also showed that he could hit from the corners as he nailed two from the left corner late in the second half.
Uriyah “CJ” Evans | 6’1″ PG | Drive Nation Austin 2022 Black (2022)
- Evans was the leading scorer (19 points) for DNA 2022 Black in their monster 80-41 win over Dallas Showtyme 2022 West. A quick-twitch point guard with good speed and dribble-drive ability, Evans was able to get to the rim and finish with smooth yet acrobatic layups. Played under control and showed good court vision on his passes, and seemed to always be around the basket bringing down rebounds.
Tyson Whybrew Tyson Whybrew 6'5" | SF Weiss | 2022 State TX | 6’5″ SF | Drive Nation Austin 2022 Black (2022)
- A versatile forward with good length and outside shooting ability, Whybrew put both on display in DNA’s opening game hitting 3 three-pointers in the first half (two from the top of the key), while also providing a shot-blocking and rim-protecting presence in the paint. Whybrew finished the game with 13 points, and his last four points were the most impressive as he had two put-back layups where he used his length to palm the ball and finish with one hand.
Traeshaun Leak Traeshaun Leak 6'0" | CG Leander Glenn | 2022 State TX | 6’0″ SG | Drive Nation Austin 2022 Black (2022)
- Leak made plays all over the court on Friday and put his gritty lockdown defense on display. He’s a relentless defender who goes 100MPH all the time, and he did a great job finishing through contact in the paint. Leak had 12 points in the contest, connecting on shots in the mid-range and around the hoop, as well as drawing contact to get to the charity stripe.
