This report covers some of the standout players who participated in the Arizona Competition Classic on March 20-21 at Apollo High School in Glendale.
6’6 W Miles Byrd of Lincoln HS (CA) 2022 (Port City Black)
Byrd is a promising 2022 prospect who has “arrived” as a player as the saying goes. He has come into his own and started to show more aggressiveness to go along with his obvious talent. He is a long and athletic wing with skills. He does have a bit of a slow release, but he can knock down shots consistently (with range). And he has always been an effective driver with a nice first step. He is active on the glass and gets his fare share of rebounds. His slender build is what he needs to develop most as he prepares for the next level.
6’5 W Emmanuel Callas of Campolindo HS (CA) 2021 (Team GRR Blue)
If you look up tough in the dictionary you will probably see a picture of Emmanuel Callas. And “he got game” as they say. It is very gratifying to see a high-level competitor who has some ability as well. He is a hard-nosed three man who shoots it ok with 3 range and he drives to the hoop like a man possessed. He’s a real nice passer with very good court vision. And he’s a high-volume rebounder. It is very perplexing that this kid has no Division I offer (the COVID era has hurt him) because he IS a legit Division I player.
6’4 CG Devontes Cobbs Devontes Cobbs 6'3" | CG Overtime Elite | 2022 GA of Eduprize Prep (AZ) 2022 (NM Team Swoosh)
Cobbs had a splendid performance and demonstrated his high-level talent consistently. He is a big-time athletic combo guard who can really fly. He makes a ton of plays in transition and he can score in a number of ways. And he is a very impressive rebounder. Most importantly, he needs to control his attitude/emotions. If he does that then the sky is the limit for him as a higher-level Division 1 prospect
6’2 SG Vincent Delano Vincent Delano 6'1" | CG Bella Vista Prep | 2023 State #292 Nation AZ of Bella Vista Prep (AZ) 2023 (The Show)
Delano is a uniquely gifted shooting guard with the skills and athleticism to indicate a bright future lies ahead for him. He continues to show that he is a high-level prospect. He has solid ball handling and passing skills and he is an impressive three-level scorer (perimeter shot, pull-up mid range, finish at the rim). He is a money player who is willing to take (and make) the big shot when the game is on the line. The big boys (schools) need to get on this kid and stay on him.
6’0 PG Justus Jackson Justus Jackson 6'0" | PG Eduprize | 2021 State AZ of Eduprize Prep (AZ) 2021 (The Show)
Jackson continues to prove himself as a legitimate prospect and this event was no different. He’s an athletic one man who plays with a lot of confidence. He shot the ball very well from way downtown in this event. He also showed a splendid pull-up game, both in the half court and in transition. Up tempo has always been his game and this is where he shines. Jackson has Division I offers but is hoping for higher-level opportunities.
6’10 C Ryan Kiachin of Bellarmine Prep (CA) 2021 (Team GRR Blue)
Kiachin had another solid outing at the Arizona Competition Classic and continue to show his prowess and that his commitment to Cornell is a steal for that school. He proved that he can step out to the perimeter and nail the shot consistently. And he has a most impressive jump hook that defines the concept of “hard to guard”. He’s a good passer who sees the court well. And he is a solid rebounder who pursues the ball consistently. Simply, Cornell is in good shape at the five position the next four years.
