SubscribePrep hoops were in attendance for the intrasquad scrimmage of the Iona Prep basketball program. We saw a lot of talent. Plenty of really good up-tempo transition basketball. But what caught my eye was not only the name players but all the young blossoming talent in the gym. The future is bright for coach Steve Alvarado’s crew. Here is my evaluation of the gold team. My colleague Kevin Daniels will post the maroon team’s players.
Andy Kim 6”3. 2022
A young player who had leadership qualities on the court. From the start, of the scrimmage, he was getting his teammates in their right spots. A vocal player. Great court vision. His head was always up and made numerous passes off the drive. Was also able to finish on his own. Very impressed with this young player.
Jaylen Pray 6”5. 2024
Jaylen has big upside. Still growing. The family tree has size in it, grandfather was 7”1. Big bodied player. His score off a spin move was about the most impressive play of the day. Very good in transition. Scored in a variety of ways around the rim with either hand. Defended the post well against a bigger player( Orlando Wallace Orlando Wallace 6'9" | PF Iona Prep | 2022 NY ).
Jordan Cardenas Jordan Cardenas 6'0" | CG Bayshore | 2022 State NY 6”4. 2022
Another young player who made a lot of really nice passes off the bounce. Good mid-range game. Tremendous court vision. Head was always looking up for the next play. Scored in transition. In the halfcourt was able to split defenders leading to a step-through finish. Very impressed with his game. Needs to gain more confidence in himself because his game is there.
Lawrence Mitchell 6”2 2022
Very quick getting to the rim. Explosive first step. Extremely athletic. Fearless and relentless in the lane.
Jayden Gayle 6”4. 2023
Still a little raw. But the ability is there. Strong inside player. Loads of upside with this player.
Ian Chamberlin 6”0. 2023
Athletic point guard. Strong and creative to the rim. Excellent defender on the perimeter. A very talented player who just needs to trust his ability.
Charley Williams 6”3. 2024
A beyond the arc lefty shooter. Came off the bench and drilled a three. A young player who will only get better playing against his teammates in practice.
