It’s only correct that we begin the list with the player that led the state in steals, averaging over 8 steals a night. Anson HS Senior Lanyc Shuler was outstanding on the defensive side of the ball but what’s scary is that he’s just as good if not better on offense, he averaged almost 30 Points a night on the season with multiple 50+ Point games.
New Life Christian Junior Guard Demetrius Polk has been one of the better overall defenders in Cumberland County this season. He uses his strength to make things difficult for opponents but also does a nice job of sliding in and taking charges at a very high rate.
Granville Central & App State signee Terence Harcum Terence Harcum 6'1" | CG Granville Central | 2021 State NC was once again one of the better overall players in 1A on both ends of the floor. He ranked #7 in the state in steals per game, with 4.5 steals a night .Harcum does a nice job of moving his feet, beating defenders to spots and not overreacting to moves from his opponent.
Middle Creek HS Guard Tharius Suggs Tharius Suggs 6'3" | CG Middle Creek | 2021 State NC is another player that got it done on both ends of the court but his defense was what helped him make a huge impact for his squad. He’s one of the leaders in charges taken nationally and also is one of the leaders in the state for steals per game, coming in at #10 with 4.2 Steals a night.
Carmel Christian Senior Forward Ben Burnham Ben Burnham 6'8" | SF Carmel Christian | 2021 State NC has been a huge part of the success of his team’s 24-1 record that has placed them in the state championship game. Burnham averages 24 Points & 13 Rebounds per game but one of his most impressive attributes is how well he protects the paint on defense. He comes in at the #9 spot in blocks in the state with just under 3 blocks a game, using his height and length to make a defensive impact.
Carver HS has a rough season this year, but one of the bright spots for their team was Senior Center Jovon Blackwell. Blackwell is raw on the offensive end but on defense he makes a nice impact and finished the season leading the state in blocks per game.
