Point guard play in the Garden State is also key as they are key to running the offense. Here are the top point guards from the Peak Skills Workout.
Tazir Cantey Tazir Cantey 6'0" | PG Eastern | 2021 State NJ , 6’0 Lindenwold 2021
Cantey was on a tear for most of the session, establishing himself as one of the top guards in South Jersey. The 6’0 guard has a good handle, which makes him hard to contain off the bounce. Cantey is more than just a slasher as he has a quick release on his shot and can get hot from distance in a hurry. He is also a solid passer as he made several slick passes during the game session. Cantey is a scoring machine who should make the First Team All-Group 1 for the second straight season.
Freddie Young Freddie Young 6'3" | PG Trenton Catholic | 2021 State NJ , 6’3 Trenton Catholic 2021
Young had a terrific session, proving that he is ready for a larger role in 2020-21. The 6’3 guard played with poise on the ball during the game and made several nice passes. Young attacked the basket hard and was able to finish through traffic. He shot the ball with confidence and played tough on-ball defense. Young is a talented guard prospect who should help Trenton Catholic in 2020-21.
Devin Benson Devin Benson 6'0" | SG Camden | 2021 State NJ , 6’0 Camden 2021
Benson may be more of a combo guard, but that does not take away from his performance at the Peak Skills Workout. The 6’0 lefty is a lethal shooter from behind the arc as he has a quick release on his shot and a good form. Benson is not just a shooter as he can beat his man off the bounce and finish around the basket. Benson is an underrated passer and works hard on the defensive end. Benson’s ability to shoot the ball from distance combined with his work on the defensive end should help Camden repeat as South Jersey Group 2 champions.
Da’Sean Lopez, 6’3 Wildwood Catholic Academy 2021
Lopez had a strong session, proving that he is ready for a bigger role in 2020-21. The 6’3 guard played with energy throughout the session and attacked the basket hard. Lopez was tenacious on the defensive end as he went all out for blocks and steals in both the 1-on-1 and game sessions. He shot the ball well from distance as he knocked down a couple of pull-up three-pointers. Lopez will be tasked with carrying more of a scoring load in 2020-21 for Wildwood Catholic Academy as the Crusaders look to repeat as Non-Public B South champions.
Jordan Stafford Jordan Stafford 6'3" | PG St. Joseph Academy | 2021 State NJ , 6’3 St. Joseph (Hammonton) 2021
Stafford is one of the most athletic guards in South Jersey, which was on full display during the session. The 6’3 guard skied for rebounds and finished above the rim during the transition drills. Stafford used his quickness to get by his defender and make plays in the halfcourt. He shot the ball well during the session and was one of the better defenders during the workout. Stafford is a skilled, gritty point guard who is looking to lead St. Joseph (Hammonton) deep into the Non-Public B South tournament.
