There was a lot of local talent on display with Team M.O.A.M. getting the better of Q6-All Stars Perry in the finals of the boys oldest division 70-59. These are a few of the players from the class of 2021 who stood out this weekend:
Team M.O.A.M
CG Javion Phelps Javion Phelps 6'1" | CG Boone | 2021 State FL 6-4 (Boone), PF Jeremiah Bannister Jeremiah Bannister 6'5" | PF Oak Ridge | 2021 State FL 6-6 (Oak Ridge)
A standout wide receiver on the gridiron, Phelps is also an absolute stud on the basketball court. With several football offers, he would absolutely be an excellent addition to a college basketball team if he chooses to be a dual sport athlete. This past weekend, he showed a very high IQ, and showed he was a deadeye 3-point shooter. Boone High School will again be a top team in Orlando, and Phelps will be a big reason why.
As for Bannister, in the final game against the Q6 All Stars, he was far too strong, and physical in the post to be stopped. Ending the game with 23 points, the bruiser showed good patience using shot fakes to draw contact, and get to the free throw line. Averaging 18 points per game on the day, the big man seems like he is poised for a strong senior season. Playing for a stacked Oak Ridge team, Bannister will provide post defense, and rebounding for a squad who looks to make a return to Lakeland for the Final Four.
Q6 All Stars-Perry
PG John Latimer III John Latimer III 6'0" | CG Apopka | 2021 State FL 6-1 (Apopka), SG Will Searl Will Searl 6'3" | CG Boone | 2021 State FL 6-3 (Boone), G/F Tyeree Bryan Tyeree Bryan 6'3" | CG Olympia | 2021 State FL 6-5 (Olympia)
Another tournament, another strong showing out of the point guard from Apopka. This weekend Latimer did a little bit of everything, in a game against a solid Florida Rams team, he score 23 points in addition to dishing out eight assists. To secure a win against a talented 1 Family team, Latimer went off for 29 points securing the teams win with some timely free throws. With low to mid major schools starting to show interest in addition to an offer from Presbyterian, the point guards recruitment should be an interesting story line to follow.
For a second tournament in a row, Searl has been one of Q6’s most consistent performers. On the tournament, the guard was efficient finding his way to double digit scoring in each game. In addition to being a deadeye 3-point shooter, Searl has proven to have a well-rounded offensive game, and is a gritty defender. With the aforementioned Javion Phelps Javion Phelps 6'1" | CG Boone | 2021 State FL returning to Boone as well, expect to see the two form one of Orlando’s most dynamic backcourts.
An athletic attacker, Bryan had his best tournament of the AAU season. With Mike McCalister Mike McCalister 6'6" | SF West Orange | 2021 State FL nursing a minor ankle injury on Sunday, the wing stepped up helping lead his team past a tough 1 Family squad in the semi finals with 17 points. Averaging double digits on the weekend, Bryan scored from all three levels in addition to blocking several shots, and grabbing rebounds. As one of the more under recruited players in Orlando, expect that to soon change as Division II schools have inquired.
Q6 All Stars- Anderson
G Elliott Yorke Elliott Yorke 5'11" | CG West Orange | 2021 State FL 6-0 (West Orange), C Imanuel Zorgvol 6-9 (Central Florida Christian)
A microwave scorer, there are few players that can shoot off the dribble as well as Yorke. Averaging over 20 points per game on the weekend, the guard had multiple games with over four 3-pointers. In addition to having an extremely quick release on his jumpshot, Yorke also excels attacking the basket, often drawing contact getting to the foul line. Expect to see Yorke thrive next season at West Orange.
Zorgvol improves every single time he steps on the court. In just his second year playing basketball in America, you can really tell he has been coachable by his strong play on the court. He has scored off of drop steps to big two handed dunks, and teammates found him for impressive alley oops. Active on the glass, and a feared shot blocker, the long-term potential of Zorgvol is intriguing. This is a player who would benefit greatly from a post grad year, to add strength and continue his rapid improvements on the court.
1 Family
CG Zavien Williams Zavien Williams 6'0" | CG Windermere Prep | 2021 State FL 6-0 (Windermere Prep), CG Jarveil Gainey Jarveil Gainey 6'3" | CG Eastside | 2021 State FL 6-2 (Gainesville-Eastside)
An ultra athletic guard who thrives in transition, Williams had a strong showing this past weekend. Defensive intensity is what stood out the most about his game, as he never backed down from a challenge, and played hard the entire game. In the semi finals against the Q6 All Stars-Perry, he scored 18 points, getting to the basket at will. With a senior year left to hone his point guard skills, Williams is a player college coaches should keep in mind.
This is the second tournament I’ve seen Gainey at that he has put on a 3-point shooting clinic. Against the Q6 All Stars –Perry, he hit five 3-pointers on his way to 21 points. With a season left to get stronger, Gainey will again be one of the best players in Gainesville next season. Already with low and mid major offers, expect to see a lot of college coaches make there way to Gainesville.
Showtime Select
PG Joshua Blazquez Joshua Blazquez 6'0" | CG Osceola | 2021 State FL 5-10 (Osceola)
A quick, shifty point guard, Blazquez always finds a way to get into the lane and make plays. Sporting one of the quickest crossover dribbles at the event, Blazquez did a great job of getting by defenders, drawing the help defense, creating scoring opportunities for his teammates. Against the Florida Rams, the floor general was at his best scoring a game high 27 points, draining four 3-Pointers and getting to the basket. A solid student with a 3.5 GPA, Blazquez will start again at point guard for Osceola, and be one of the better lead guards in the area.
