Grassroots events have largely gotten underway in some parts of the country while others are still on hold. A lot of players have been missing out on a time when they’d usually have ample opportunities to showcase their game for college coaches.
With events still pretty much on hold here in California, I’ve used the time to watch film on players that I haven’t quite watched in depth before. Here’s a group of players from the Class of 2022 that I’ve seen through film that could be players to look out for this upcoming season. I’ll have more groupings of players throughout this month.
1. Riyaan Jiwani Riyaan Jiwani 6'2" | SG Pacifica Christian OC | 2022 State CA-S – Pacifica Christian-OC
Jiwani is a knock down shooter. He moves very well without the ball to get open on the perimeter. He’s got a very quick release and is near automatic if left open. He can shoot with defenders rushing at him and he can use fakes to get his defender in the air and get in closer for a midrange jumper. Solid catch and shoot player and can hit pull-up threes off the dribble.
2. Sam Slutske Sam Slutske 6'0" | PG Crossroads | 2022 State CA-S – Crossroads
Slutske is a young guard who should continue to improve and play a big role on this Roadrunners team. He’s a good outside shooter, but he can also but the ball on the floor and make plays off the dribble. He can get to the rim and he has good body control to finish around the defense. He’s got a little playmaking to his game as well. Sees the floor and can find open shooters.
3. Jacob Forster Jacob Forster 5'11" | PG Bishop Montgomery | 2022 State CA-S – Bishop Montgomery
The main thing that stood out to me when watching film was Forster’s ability to rebound. He’s always around the rim crashing the glass. He boxes out properly. He can start the fast break with his rebounding, and he can handle the ball in transition too. Unselfish player who looks for his teammates both on the break and in halfcourt sets. Solid shooter from the three-point line.
4. Paolo Belfiore Paolo Belfiore 6'1" | CG Santa Margarita | 2022 CA-S – Santa Margarita
Belfiore is a quick guard who excels at getting to the rim. He’s got a quick first step and he’s a crafty finisher at the rim. Can finish with either hand around the defense. He can suck the defense in and kick out to shooters or find cutters. He can play either shooting guard or point guard. He’s a strong defender too. Moves his feet well and can keep up with the ball-handler. Can recover if beat off the dribble.
5. TJ Tittlefitz – Orange Lutheran
Tittlefitz has a methodical and fundamental game. He’s a big forward with wing-like skills. He’s strong and can finish around defenders in the paint. He’s got a solid midrange game and can take a couple dribbles and shoot off the bounce. Good three-point shooter. He’s got solid footwork in the paint. Can make plays with the ball in his hands and find open teammates, especially in transition.
