There were 10 teams of 10 players on each team and each team played 3 games after a series of drills and warm-ups.
Here are some of the sleepers from the event:
Damion Byrd Damion Byrd 5'10" | PG Silverado | 2022 State NV (Slam Academy-NV)
-Not a sleeper in NV as he is ranked #10 from his class, but an unknown outside the state. A quick PG with a shifty handle to get downhill. He can make plays for others with good court vision and is a great on-ball defender using his speed and sturdy frame. He can make strides with his perimeter shooting but the rising junior from NV had a good showing.
Tomi Stevens Tomi Stevens 6'3" | SF Skyline Prep | 2022 State AZ (Mountain Pointe)
-A brand new player on the scene since his missed most of last year with an injury. The family is from England and he has that euro smart high-IQ game. He shot the ball as well as you could with a pure stroke. He gets great ball rotation and moves without the ball plus has a nice floater game. He also is sneaky athletic.
Matthew Buechner Matthew Buechner 6'8" | C Chaparral | 2021 State AZ (Phhoenix Prep)
-A newcomer by way of Vegas. He was at Chaparral last year but unfortunately missed the entire season with torn ligaments. He is slowly coming back and he told me he was definitely sore after the game on Saturday and isn’t fully 100%. He rebounds well in his area and can step out and hit perimeter shots. He is a good passer and plays strong in the paint to push out other post players. He can handle the ball decently for a big man and it will be interesting to see him fully healthy in the next few months.
Daryian Matthews Daryian Matthews 6'5" | PF Dysart | 2021 State AZ (Dysart)
-A warrior inside was one of the state leaders in rebounds at nearly 16 rebs per game last year! A super strong kid who is an undersized post player but is strong as an ox. He is mostly a paint scorer with big hands and really long arms allowing him to corral rebounds out of his area. His motor doesn’t shut off and he can shoot from 10-feet and in.
Logan Porter (Heritage-Maricopa)
-A cerebral scorer who is known as a 3pt shooter, but he is showing more to his game. He can now drive the lane and gives high effort to rebound the ball and makes smart plays. He moves without the ball and plays hard throughout a game. He will still make his money with his shooting.
Robert Smith Robert Smith 6'0" | PG Page | 2021 State AZ (Page)
-A new player since I don’t get a chance to see teams like Page, as they are almost 5 hours away. Smith is a decent athlete with a top-notch motor to rebound the ball in and out of his area. He also will make the 3 if he is left open. He is a tougher guard who isn’t afraid to mix it up inside the paint. He will most likely have an outstanding season in 3A next year. Page lost by only three points in the Final-4 last year and will look to make another run led by Smith.
Ben Wilder Ben Wilder 6'5" | SF Bradshaw Mountain | 2023 State AZ (Bradshaw Mountain)
-Another brand new player for me and I came away impressed. He has sneaky bounce with a decent handle to get into the lane and a sturdy frame to absorb contact. He has good skill from mid to the 3 but seems to like attacking the basket with a decent handle.
