Continue ReadingAfter a 3 month hiatus, Prep Hoops finally got back to watching some live basketball as the Flyght Academy hosted an open gym for some of Dayton’s top local prospects. 6 teams were assembled and battled it out with guys as old as seniors and as young as incoming freshmen playing in some intriguing matchups. I start recap coverage by providing my top performers from the 2021 class.
Malcolm Curry Malcolm Curry 6'2" | SG Wayne | 2022 State OH (Wayne)- Curry is one of the most lethal guards off the perimeter. Quick footwork and handles, he combines the speed with a strong first step to blow by opposing defenders. Utilizes the spin move to create additional separation. Extremely athletic guard that did a better job protecting the basketball in the open gym.
Jayson Hayes (Centerville)-Tough kid that combines his football skill with his toughness on the gridiron. Strong upper body that powers through opposing bigs. What impressed me most was his tenacity on the glass. Goes up with two hands and grabs the basketball with authority.
Anthony McComb Anthony McComb 6'2" | SG Trotwood | 2021 State OH (Thurgood Marshall)- Maybe the best upperclassmen guard at the open run. Crossover is absolutely dangerous and so quick it’s blink and you will miss. Attacks with a purpose and has the athleticism and speed to get into the paint consistently. Sometimes dribbled the ball too much, but overall is a matchup nightmare and tough to defend.
Tyler Montague (Butler)- Overall one of the fastest guys I’ve seen. Montague was able to start the break but also showed comfortability playing in the halfcourt. Overall is so fast on the dribble drive and when avoiding defensive pressure. With a little added bulk and an improved jump shot, could compete as the best player in the MVL come 2021.
Justin O’Neal (Meadowdale)- Left handed slasher. Plays with a high motor and aggressive as heck on the drive. Great defensive player, especially with his lateral quickness. Must improve with his attacking to the right side, but overall has the skills to be one of the City League’s best offensive players in 2021.
