College Commitment: Koby Williamson (2020 Santiam Christian HS)
It took some time for him to mull over his options, but Koby Williamson Koby Williamson 6'8" | PF Santiam Christian | 2020 State OR wanted to make the decision that was best for his future. The all-around 6-foot-8 forward from Santiam Christian had opportunities in-state both near and far from home. He and his family weighed everything out and over the weekend the big man decided he wanted to head East to play his college basketball at Eastern Oregon.
“I like the opportunity at EOU to earn playing time my freshman year,” Williamson said. “Coach Labarda showed faith in me throughout the recruiting process and told me the opportunity is there with some senior posts graduating last year. I also grew up in a small town and the tight knit La Grande community was something I liked.”
Williamson had been in touch with Eastern Oregon head coach Carlito Labarda for awhile and when the Mountaineers put a scholarship offer on the table, it was music to his ears. He considered staying a little closer to home at an NWAC school but really liked what he heard about Eastern Oregon and how it matched what he wanted both on and off the court.
“From what I hear, the people there really support their Mountaineer athletics,” Williamson said. “They have a good business program which I plan on majoring in. I think it’s a great fit.”
A mobile big man who averaged 18.3 points and 10 rebounds his senior season, Williamson also anchored the paint defensively by registering 4.7 blocks per contest. He knows the step up to college basketball is a big one and he’s been getting a head start this off-seaosn getting ready.
“I’ve already started on their workout plan,” Williamson said. “I want to get quicker and more explosive.”
Williamson finished as the #21 ranked player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
