SubscribeLAGUNA NIGUEL – Here’s a look at six “non-committed/unsigned” guys from the SoCal Class of 2020 that have a chance to be quality point guards on multiple levels of college hoops:
Michael Frankling (6-0/Gardena): Twice a first-team, All-L.A. City Open Division selection after leading the Panthers to consecutive spots in the Open Division playoffs (finishing fifth this past season).
Frankling (pictured) powers his way into the lane with ease, and may be have been the best passer in the section as a senior.
Justin Gladney (6-0/Fairfax): The left hander was a key element to the Lions’ run to a City Open title as a junior and runner-up finish to Westchester this past season.
He’s got a knack for getting defenders on his hip, getting into the lane and scoring by way of pull-up jumpers or crafty layups over or around defenders. He also rebounds a lot “bigger” than his size would seem to dictate.
Stacy Johnson (6-1/Oxnard): Johnson was the best player for a squad program that was 55-12 over the past two seasons, including a 32-3 mark in 2019-20 when the Yellowjackets lost to Hesperia in the CIF Southern Section 2A playoffs before bouncing back for a win in a rematch in the State Southern D-II second round. The Yellowjackets fell by a point to St. Francis in the regional semifinals.
Few accelerate as rapidly as he does on the dribble, nor defend as tenaciously as he does on the ball.
Sean Newman (6-0/Culver City): Like Stacy Johnson, Newman has stunning straight-line speed on the dribble, with a knack for pumping the brakes and then punching the accelerator again to glide to the glass for layups.
Will be even more formidable with 10-15 added pounds of muscle in a year or so.
Malvin Payero (6-1/Valley Christian): Payero was a two-time all-Southern Section choice for the Defenders.
The starting PG last spring and summer for the Veritas club program, Payero – originally from the Dominican Republic – had multiple impressive efforts against standout Olympic League teams Heritage Christian and Village Christian.
Justin Williams (6-2/JSerra): He was overshadowed during his two seasons by the University of Utah-bound Ian Martinez.
But Williams, who attended Canyon in Anaheim as a freshman and sophomore, showed off his depth in ball-handling, playmaking and score skill against quality opponents, inside and outside of the Trinity League.
