Continue ReadingWith spring basketball likely shelved completely and the status of summer hoops still up in the air, we wanted to break down SoCal’s classes by position to see how deep each of them are. Here’s a closer look at the top power forwards and centers in the rising senior class.
Wilhelm Breidenbach Wilhelm Breidenbach 6'8" | PF Mater Dei | 2021 State #91 Nation CA-S , Mater Dei – Breidenbach embodies what the modern forward looks like in today’s basketball landscape. At 6-feet-8 he can stretch the floor to the three-point line, pass out of the low and high post spots and rebound the defensive, push the break and make high IQ decisions due to his ball skills and vision.
Obinna Anyanwu Obinna Anyanwu 6'7" | SF Cathedral Catholic | 2021 State #160 Nation CA-S , Cathedral Catholic – The highly active forward is one of the best rebounders in and out of his area that SoCal has to offer. It’s rare to see a guy as willing as he is to pursue missed shots on the offensive and defensive glass. Anyanwu’s propensity to crash the offensive glass creates a ton of second chance opportunities and buckets. Anyanwu is a power finisher around the basket who has touch with either hand.
Harrison Hornery Harrison Hornery 6'9" | PF Mater Dei | 2021 State #168 Nation CA-S , Mater Dei – Hornery is has the size, length and fluid shooting mechanics of your prototypical stretch four man and that’s exactly what the USC coaching staff envisions him doing when he steps onto campus. At 6-9, Hornery has a smooth stroke from three-point range which gives him the potential to be a match-up nightmare when playing the five in a small-ball situation.
Nick Davidson Nick Davidson 6'8" | PF Mater Dei | 2021 State CA-S , Mater Dei – Davidson is a skilled four-man who continued to extend his offensive range during his junior campaign. The 6-foot-8 power forward can score with his back to the basket, with touch with either hand, or pop out and hit a short-corner or elbow 15-footer. Davidson likely has two paths to take with his development: to become a true stretch four he must extend his range consistently to the three-point line, but with his footwork and touch, he could become a true low-post scoring threat.
Truman Gettings Truman Gettings 6'8" | PF Harvard-Westlake | 2021 State CA-S , Harvard-Westlake – Gettings is of the more traditional power forward mold with his strengths being interior scoring, defense and rebounding. Strong and burly at 6-feet-8, Gettings rebounds his area well with fundamental block-out skills and snatching missed shots at their peak. Gettings uses his broad shoulders to power through contact and score in the paint. Look for him to continue to extend his range with face-up and trail mid-range shots.
Harold Yu Harold Yu 7'3" | C Sierra Canyon | 2021 State CA-S , Sierra Canyon – Yu continued to progress throughout his junior season and became a viable rim protector for the top team in California. The 7-foot-3 center obviously has impressive measureables, but mobility and conditioning were a concern that kept him off the floor during his sophomore season. Those are no longer issues for Yu who improved how quickly he changes ends of the floor and reacts when playing help-side defense.
