STATE TOURNAMENT: Class 2A Recaps
Semifinal #2: #3 North Linn 79, #2 Treynor 58
It’s usually conference foes like East Buchanan or Maquoketa Valley (no offense, fellas) that North Linn does this to, not elite 2A teams that looked like the best team in the class just two nights ago. But on Wednesday night, North Linn looked like the best team in the world. OK, maybe that’s a stretch, but damn the Lynx were impressive en route to a 79-58 win over Treynor, advancing to the 2A championship game, where they’ll have a chance to defend their title.
The Lynx scored the first 15 points of the game and never looked back, forcing 17 Cardinal turnovers (10 in the first quarter) and rolling to the win. The Lynx lead got as big as 30.
It was Austin Miller Austin Miller 6'2" | PF North Linn | 2020 State IA who got the party started early, knocking down a pair of 3s within the first 90 seconds of play. Miller made just 11 3s on the season coming into this one. It’s not that he’s a bad shooter, it’s just not his game. He’s an animal in the paint. But he hit them with those quick 3s, and the game was over before it got started. The quickness of the Lynx press harassed the Cardinals all night, and it was never competitive. When the Lynx have it rolling like they did on Wednesday night, there isn’t a more fun team in the state to watch.
North Linn improves to 26-0 on the year with the win, setting up a title game rematch with Boyden-Hull on Friday afternoon. The Lynx are riding a 52-game winning streak and are now 106-3 in their last 109 games. Kelderman scored a game-high 27 points off the bench in the Comets win
Semifinal #1: #1 Boyden-Hull 64, #4 Camanche 49
A stagnant offense was woken up in a big way by Marcus Kelderman on Wednesday night, as the Boyden-Hull junior came off the bench to score a game-high 27 points, helping the top-seeded Comets advance to Friday’s championship game.
Trailing 7-2 with 40 seconds left in the first quarter, Kelderman scored his first of many points. He scored seven straight for the Comets in the second quarter, helping them nab a narrow 24-23 halftime lead.
Boyden-Hull’s entire team started to get involved in the third quarter, as the Comets went 8-11 from the floor, winning the third stanza 21-9 to grab complete control of the game. Camanche was able to claw back to within nine, 52-43, with 2:49 left, but once again, the free throw line was their bugaboo. The Indians were just 11-29 from the charity stripe in the loss, thwarting any comeback effort they dreamed of.
Boyden-Hull improves to 23-3 on the season, and will await the winner of the Treynor-North Linn game. The Comets will play for the 2A title for the second straight season (they lost to North Linn last year in the championship game). They were led by Marcus Kelderman, who had 27 points and 8 rebounds. Tanner Te Slaa Tanner Te Slaa 6'5" | SF Boyden-Hull | 2022 State IA added 13 points and 6 rebounds, and Andrew Frick had 11 points in the win.

MVP: Marcus Kelderman (Boyden-Hull) — 27 points (9-16 FG, 1-5 3P, 8-12 FT), 8 rebounds, 3 steals
The 6-1 junior guard comes off the bench for the Comets to provide a scoring spark (he averages 11.5 points a game this year), and provide a spark he did. His 27 points are among the highest in the tournament this season, and he did it in a variety of ways – in transition, getting to the rim off the dribble, mid-range jumpers and a 3. He was huge for the Comets, lifting them to Friday night.

Quarterfinal #4: #4 Camanche 67, #5 Monticello 52
The rubber match between these two River Valley Conference foes was filled with big runs, and ultimately, it was the firepower of Camanche that won out, as the fourth-seeded Indians advance to Wednesday’s semifinals with a 67-52 win over fifth-seeded Monticello on Tuesday morning.
Camanche came out of the gates hot, building up a lead as big as 18 in the second quarter before Monticello closed the half on an 11-2 run to pull within eight, 31-23, at the break.
The Panthers scored on a Connor Lambert 3 to open the second half to pull within five points, but Camanche responded with an 11-2 run to get it back to double digits. Monticello only got back within single digits again once, when they trailed by nine, 59-50, with 4:15 to play. At that point, the Panthers started to foul Camanche on every possession, a strategy that would be worked if they had been able to convert themselves on the offensive end, as Camanche really struggles at the line as a team (56.1% on the year, 14-31 for 45.2% in this one). Nonetheless, Camanche just had too many explosive runs at the end of the day.
Camanche improves to 22-3 with the win. The Indians were led by LJ Henderson LJ Henderson 6'2" | SG Camanche | 2020 State IA , who had 17 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Monticello’s season ends with a 21-3 record and the school’s first state tournament appearance since 1960. Only one key contributor for this group is a senior, and all five starters will be back, so expect to see the Panthers challenging for a state title next year. They were led by Justin Recker Justin Recker 6'6" | PF Monticello | 2021 State IA , who had a game-high 21 points. Connor Lambert had 12 points and Ty Kehoe chipped in 11 in the loss.

The Clinton transfer is an athletic freak who impacts the game in a number of ways, as you can see by looking at that stat line. The free throws are a problem, yes, but you can’t take someone off the floor who makes such a big impact on both ends of the floor.

Quarterfinal #3: #1 Boyden-Hull 57, #8 Woodward-Granger 26
There wasn’t much drama involved in the nightcap, as the top-seeded Comets methodically beat down Woodward-Granger, using their length, versatility and talent to dispatch the Hawks, 57-26, on Monday night, advancing to Wednesday’s semifinals.
Woodward-Granger led for 27 seconds in the game, a brief 3-2 lead, before Boyden-Hull took over, building an 11-point lead after the first quarter. The lead only got back down to single digits once, when they led by eight in the second quarter.
A typical Boyden-Hull team, the Comets are filled with long players who all do a bit of everything on the floor and play a beautiful style of basketball. Their effort and skill was just way too much for Woodward-Granger to overcome.

Quarterfinal #2: #2 Treynor 69, #7 Pella Christian 53
The 2020 Treynor Cardinals can put up points in a hurry, and that used a quick spurt to grab control of their quarterfinal meeting with Pella Christian en route to a 69-53 win, advancing to Wednesday’s semifinal, where they’ll meet North Linn.
Trailing 17-16 with 4:25 left in the second quarter, the Cardinals went on a quick 11-2 run over the course of the next 1:28, grabbing a 27-19 lead. Pella Christian never got any closer than three points the rest of the way. Treynor led by double digits for a majority of the second half in an impressive display over a Pella Christian team that notched wins over both Norwalk and Pella, considered two of the favorites in the 3A field, this season.
That run featured a little bit of everything that makes Treynor so dangerous. Back-to-back 3s from Jack Stogdill Jack Stogdill 6'2" | PG Treynor | 2020 State IA sandwiched a bucket by Pella Christian’s Jack Vermeer. It wasn’t nearly as high scoring as many expected it to be, given that both of these teams came in averaging north of 80 points a game.
