STATE TOURNAMENT: Class 1A Recaps
Semifinal #2: #2 Bishop Garrigan 66, #6 West Fork 52
Over the course of 32 minutes, the overwhelming size of Bishop Garrigan wore down a really good West Fork team, as the Golden Bears made a date with Wapsie Valley in Friday’s 1A championship game with a 66-52 win over the Warhawks on Wednesday evening.
Neither team led by more than six points in a first half that featured three ties and five lead changes, and Bishop Garrigan took a 29-27 lead into the break. The Golden Bears built their lead to as many as 11 in the third quarter before a late West Fork run got them back within 47-41 heading into the final eight minutes.
The fourth quarter was dominated by the Golden Bears. They scored the first 13 points of the quarter, turning their 47-41 lead into a 60-41 lead, and comfortably rolling into the championship game for the first time in school history.
Bishop Garrigan improves to 24-2 on the year with the win. They were led by Angelo Winkel Angelo Winkel 6'9" | C Bishop Garrigan | 2021 State IA , who had 16 points, 15 rebounds and 5 blocks. John Joyce John Joyce 6'3" | PG Bishop Garrigan | 2020 State IA scored a team-high 17 points, and Cade Winkel Cade Winkel 6'4" | PF Bishop Garrigan | 2020 State IA chipped in 13. West Fork drops to 24-3 with the loss. The Warhawks will play Montezuma in the consolation game on Thursday morning. They were led by Jakob Washington, who had 17 points and 9 rebounds. Brayden Vold added 12 points. Washington and Kayden Ames, the team’s top two scorers, both return next year for the Warhawks, and this is always a strong program, so expect to see West Fork back in the running next season.
MVP: Angelo Winkel Angelo Winkel 6'9" | C Bishop Garrigan | 2021 State IA (Bishop Garrigan) — 16 points (7-11 FG, 1-2 3P, 1-2 FT), 15 rebounds, 5 blocks
The 6-9 junior forward dominated the painted area on both ends of the floor, pulling down 15 rebounds and scoring an efficient 16 points with his 5 blocks.

Meyer had a game-high 17 points in Wapsie Valley’s win
Semifinal #1: #8 Wapsie Valley 57, #4 Montezuma 42
Perhaps the opposing coaches made a mistake when they seeded this Wapsie Valley team eighth coming into the week. They don’t seem to mind playing the “underdog” role, though, as their run at the 1A state tournament continues into Friday following a 57-42 win over fourth-seeded Montezuma in the semifinals. The Warriors will meet either Bishop Garrigan or West Fork in the 1A championship game on Friday, with tip set for 2:00 pm.
Wapsie Valley led this one wire-to-wire, jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead and never looking back. The closest Montezuma got the rest of the way was one, 24-23, late in the second quarter on a Masin Shearer 3. The Warriors did a good job throughout, in particular Tyler Ott, at containing Montezuma star guard Trey Shearer Trey Shearer 5'10" | PG Montezuma | 2021 State IA , forcing him to make tough, contested shots. And while Shearer is great, the rest of the Braves roster didn’t provide much help in this one, while the Warriors had an extremely balanced attack.
Wapsie dominated the fourth quarter, winning it 22-11, en route to the win. They scored the first eight points of the quarter to push a four-point lead up to 12, and they cruised the rest of the way. Legendary coach Marty McKowen, who has now won 595 games, will coach in his second state championship game. His Warriors lost to Sioux Center back in 2003 in the 2A championship game.
Wapsie Valley improves to 20-7 on the year with the win. Gunner Meyer led the way with 17 points, including the highlight of the tournament with an impressive putback dunk early in the first quarter. Kiks Rosengarten had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Kobe Risse had 14 points with 5 assists. The Warriors turned eight Montezuma turnovers into 18 points.
Montezuma falls to 24-3 on the season. The Braves will play the Bishop Garrigan-West Fork loser in the consolation game on Thursday morning. They lose only one starter, Brayden Arendt, and bring back nearly 92% of their scoring, so expect to see them back in the running next year. They were led by Truman State commit, junior Trey Shearer Trey Shearer 5'10" | PG Montezuma | 2021 State IA , who had 16 points in the loss. Brayden Arendt chipped in 12, but the Braves shot just 17-49 (34.7%) from the floor and 21.7% (5-23) from behind the arc.
MVP: Gunner Meyer (Wapsie Valley) — 17 points (6-7 FG, 3-4 3P, 2-3 FT), 4 rebounds, 1 block, 2 steals
Few players in any class have risen their stock as much as this 6-4 sophomore wing has this week. He’s been great on the offensive end, showing off his efficiency and impressive athleticism, as seen in the highlight below – thank you to the Cedar Rapids Gazette for that one.

Quarterfinal #4: #6 West Fork 55, #3 St. Mary’s 53
West Fork senior big man Brayden Vold was the hero on Monday afternoon, as his layup off of a baseline out-of-bounds play with 0.6 seconds to play lifted sixth-seeded West Fork to a 55-53 win, upsetting third-seeded St. Mary’s of Remsen. They’ll play fellow Top of Iowa Conference team Bishop Garrigan in the semifinals on Wednesday.
A superbly played game by both teams, there were 12 ties and 16 lead changes throughout the course of the afternoon. Leading by one, 30-29, at the break, St. Mary’s opened the second half with an 11-2 run to take a 10-point lead, 41-31, and it looked like they may have finally broken through and started to run away with it. Not so fast, as the Warhawks closed the quarter on a 10-0 run to tie it right back up heading to the fourth quarter.
The teams exchanged buckets throughout the majority of the final period. Following a Spencer Schorg Spencer Schorg 6'1" | PG St. Mary's, Remsen | 2020 State IA layup to give St. Mary’s a 52-51 lead with 1:00 to play, West Fork answered with an Ian Latham Ian Latham 5'11" | PG West Fork | 2020 State IA blow-by for a layup of his own, 53-52 Warhawks. Austin Jensen went 1-2 at the line with 31.1 to play to tie it and West Fork held for the last shot. Latham drove and lost the ball, but it went out of bounds off of St. Mary’s, so the Warhawks had a chance with 4.4 seconds left, under their own basket.
The final play was designed to get the ball to sharpshooter Kayden Ames, but he was covered up well, and a rolling Brayden Vold was the next option. He caught the ball just outside the paint, took a dribble and tossed up a lefty floater that bounced around and finally fell through. The officials put 0.6 seconds left on the clock, but St. Mary’s couldn’t get a shot off.
West Fork improves to 24-2 on the year with the win. The Warhawks shot 60% from the floor in the game and were led by Jakob Washington, who had 12 points and 7 rebounds. Ian Latham Ian Latham 5'11" | PG West Fork | 2020 State IA and Kayden Ames each added 10 points.
St. Mary’s season ends at 22-4. The Hawks were led by Spencer Schorg Spencer Schorg 6'1" | PG St. Mary's, Remsen | 2020 State IA , who had a game-high 19 points. Skyler Waldschmitt added 12 in the loss.

You could give the honors to just about any of the West Fork starters, but we’ll give the nod to Ames, who led the team with 4 assists. His 3-point shooting prowess is also what the St. Mary’s defense was worried about on the final shot, and it helped open up Vold for the game-winner.

Quarterfinal #3: #2 Bishop Garrigan 55, #7 Springville 52
It turns out, the 6-9 potential Division I basketball player was a major difference maker. Who would’ve thought? Angelo Winkel Angelo Winkel 6'9" | C Bishop Garrigan | 2021 State IA put together a huge second half, avoiding foul trouble for the final 10 minutes, as second-seeded Bishop Garrigan advanced to Wednesday’s semifinals, coming back to beat a fast, feisty Springville team, 55-52, on Monday afternoon.
Winkel, Bishop Garrigan’s star, picked up his fourth foul with 5:24 left in the third quarter and Springville responded by going on a 16-2 run, building a 43-34 lead. (He had missed the final 10 minutes of the first half with two fouls, as well.) Winkel came back with 2:19 left in the third quarter, with his team trailing by nine, and dominated the rest of the afternoon, helping the Golden Bears make a spirited comeback.
After a Luke Menster drive and bucket gave Springville a 48-41 lead with 5:00 to go, Garrigan responded with a 9-0 run to take the lead with 2:58 left. Both teams missed key free throws throughout the fourth quarter, but Alex Koppes stepped up and calmly made a pair with 17.1 left to trim Garrigan’s lead back down to 1, 53-52. The Orioles forced a turnover on the ensuing inbounds, and Koppes was fouled on the inbounds play, going to the line with a chance to take the lead on a 1-and-1. He missed the front end, sending Winkel to the line for his own 1-and-1. He missed the front end, but got his own board and got it to John Joyce John Joyce 6'3" | PG Bishop Garrigan | 2020 State IA , who made a pair to give them a 3-point lead. Winkel blocked Bryce Wilson’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer, and Garrigan survives and advances.
Garrigan improves to 23-2 with the win. They’ll meet either Remsen, St. Mary’s or West Fork in the semifinals. They were led by Angelo Winkel Angelo Winkel 6'9" | C Bishop Garrigan | 2021 State IA , who had 22 points, 14 rebounds and 5 blocks, despite playing just 19 minutes due to that foul trouble. Springville’s season ends with a 20-6 record and their first State appearance since 1975. The Orioles start two juniors and two sophomores, so expect to see them back in the running in Des Moines next year. They were led by Alex Koppes, the lone Orioles to finish in double figures with 21 points.

Meyer had a game-high 19 points in Wapsie Valley’s upset win
Quarterfinal #2: #8 Wapsie Valley 49, #1 Lake Mills 45
The question going into the tournament was whether or not they could make enough jumpers to keep advancing. Eighth-seeded Wapsie Valley packed their defense into the paint and made the Bulldogs prove it, and they didn’t deliver on Monday morning, as Wapsie Valley upset Lake Mills, 49-45, to advance to Wednesday’s semifinal, where they’ll meet Montezuma.
Lake Mills was able to jump out to a 20-13 lead midway through the second quarter before Wapsie Valley closed the half on an 11-4 run to pull even, heading to the locker rooms tied at 24. Lake Mills pulled down 10 offensive rebounds in the half and scored 20 points in the paint, both areas that Wapsie Valley took care of in the second half.
The teams exchanged blows for the first 10-11 minutes of the second half, until a Kobe Risse floater and Gunner Meyer 3 gave the Warriors a 46-42 lead with 3:30 to play. Lake Mills was able to claw back within a point, and had a few possessions with a chance to take the lead, but couldn’t get over the hump.
Leading 47-45 with 30.9 seconds left, Wapsie Valley guard Blayde Bellis went to the line for a 1-and-1. He missed the front end, but star forward Kiks Rosengarten pulled down the offensive rebound and put it back in, giving Wapsie the four-point lead and the final margin.
Wapsie Valley improves to 19-7 on the year, advancing to Wednesday’s semifinal. The Warriors were led by Gunner Meyer, who had 19 points. Kiks Rosengarten had 16 points and 9 rebounds in the win. Wapsie limited Lake Mills to just five offensive rebounds and six points in the paint in the second half, locking up those two key areas that hurt them in the first half.
Lake Mills season ends with a 23-3 record. The Bulldogs advanced to their first state tournament since 1986. With Dashawn Linnen, Caleb Bacon, Bennett Berger and Wyatt Helming coming back next year, they should be solid again. The ‘Dogs were led by Chett Helming Chett Helming 6'4" | SF Lake Mills | 2020 State IA , who had 14 points and 9 rebounds in the loss. MVP: Gunner Meyer (Wapsie Valley) — 19 points (6-13 FG, 3-5 3P, 4-5 FT), 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, 2 steals
The 6-4 sophomore combo forward had a big game, hitting big shot after big shot for the Warriors. He showed a nice looking jumper, was active on the defensive end and scored a team-high 19 points in the win.

Quarterfinal #1: #4 Montezuma 75, #5 Martensdale-St. Mary’s 50
You just knew that eventually Trey Shearer Trey Shearer 5'10" | PG Montezuma | 2021 State IA was going to take the game over. He’s too good not to. And he completely took over the game in the third quarter, helping lead Montezuma to a quarterfinal win over Martensdale-St. Mary’s on Monday morning, 75-50.
The first half was an interesting contrast, as Montezuma’s quick guards were able to get into the paint seemingly at will early on, helping them build up a 30-21 lead. The Blue Devils had a huge size advantage, particularly with the 6-10 Isaac Gavin Isaac Gavin 6'10" | C Martensdale-St Marys | 2020 State IA in the middle, and closed the half on a 6-0 run to pull back within 3, 30-27, but eventually the Braves quickness just took over.
The Truman State commit scored seven straight points during a 10-0 Braves run that helped Montezuma take control of a tight game. Early in the third quarter, Martensdale-St. Mary’s tied the game at 32. Then Shearer took over, helping spark a 23-4 run to close out the third quarter and give Montezuma a 55-36 lead. And when this group gets a sizable lead, good luck coming back on them. With the guard play the Braves have (most notably the ball handling ability of Shearer, of course), it’s tough to force turnovers and mount a comeback.
Montezuma improves to 24-2 with the win, and will play in the semifinals for the second straight year. They’ll face either Lake Mills or Wapsie Valley on Wednesday afternoon. The Braves were led by Trey Shearer Trey Shearer 5'10" | PG Montezuma | 2021 State IA , who had a game-high 24 points. Eddie Burgess added 19 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists. Brayden Arendt had 13 points and Masin Shearer added 10 in the win.
Martensdale-St. Mary’s season ends at 23-4, and with the Blue Devils’ first ever state tournament appearance. They bring back four starters from this group, and seven of their top eight scorers, so expect to see them competing for a shot at State again next season. The Truman State commit took over the game in the third quarter to help Montezuma blow the game open. He’s a special player who changes speeds extremely well, finishes at the rim and can really shoot it. Eddie Burgess also had an outstanding game, but Shearer was clearly the best player on the floor.
