Despite a valiant effort from the Mustangs, Chaminade established their dominance early, and the Red Devils cruised to a 74-48 victory. They advance to play Mehlville on Saturday with a Final Four berth on the line.
Here’s a look at the standouts from Wendesday’s game:
Player of the Game: So G Damien Mayo Jr | Chaminade
Mayo was in his bag Wednesday night and continues to establish himself as one of the top 2022 guards in the area. He set the tone early with a leak-out, one-hand jam and from there he put on a shooting clinic. He is capable beyond his years at creating quality looks off the bounce and his pull-up jumper was feathery and automatic against Marquette. He did a nice job, as always, defensively and led the way for Chaminade with 18 points in the win.
Paint Patrol: So F Tarris Reed | Chaminade
Another day, another dominant performance in the lane from Tarris Reed. The sophomore sensation was a lethal finisher in the pick and roll Wednesday night setting heavy screens and receiving the ball high or low ready to score it. Continues to show polished footwork back to basket. Owned the glass and swatted away anything that came in his house. He finished with 14 points in the win.
Sharpshooter: Sr G Luke Kasubke Luke Kasubke 6'5" | SG Chaminade Prep | 2020 State #128 Nation MO | Chaminade
Luke found his stroke Wednesday night against Marquette, knocking down a pair of three pointers and pitching in a dozen points in the big Chaminade win. For some reason, his defender gave him cushion early, and Luke made him pay from the top of the key. The Kansas State signee is one of the areas best shooters, but can also provide value as a crafty distributor and a wing defender with length.
Impressive Senior Duo: Matteus Case Matteus Case 6'5" | SG Chaminade | 2020 State MO & Harrison Vickers Harrison Vickers 6'5" | SF Chaminade | 2020 State MO | Chaminade
Case brings good size and positional versatility to the Chaminade team. He had point guard duties at times and did very well in the pick and roll game with Reed. He is explosive off the bounce and can finish on you at the rim or finesse you with soft touch on the floater. Capable from beyond the arc. He finished with 9 points.
Vickers is a high-motor guy with relentless energy on both ends of the floor. He can do a little bit of everything quite honestly, but has carved out his most important role as an athletic, physical wing that crashes the offensive glass like a mad man and gets put back after put back when he isn’t boxed out. He had a handful of those Wednesday night and pitched in a key 8 points.
Impressive Mustang Guards: Brendan Harter & Owen Marsh | Marquette
Harter is a very crafty point guard with sneaky athleticism that played well against Chaminade. He opened up the game with a tough runner in the lane. Did a nice job recognizing defenders going under ballscreens and pulled up to knock down a three. He also showed impressive hang time and ball control in the mid-range.
Marsh is a heads up player that gives max effort and brings physicality to the team. His mid-range jumper looked good last night and he was willing to post on guards and defend any position needed on the other end of the floor.
