Game | Location | Our Pick | Reasoning |
Lake Mills vs. Turkey Valley | Charles City | Lake Mills | Turkey Valley has been one of the best defensive teams in 1A this year, allowing just 38.5 points a game, but they’ll have their hands full with powerful Lake Mills attack. Bulldogs entered the season ranked #1, will be our pick to win it all. They punch State ticket behind big nights from DaShawn Linnen and Chett Helming. |
Mount Ayr vs. Martensdale-St. Mary’s | Creston | Martensdale-St. Mary’s | Blue Devils won regular season meeting by 17 a month ago. Raiders don’t have an answer for the size and length that MStM can put on the floor with 6-3 Trey Baker, 6-10 Isaac Gavin. |
Springville vs. Pekin | Iowa City West | Springville | Both teams playing strong ball, edge goes to Orioles team that has more offensive options, better free throw shooting. Tight game throughout, decided in the final four minutes. |
Montezuma vs. Nodaway Valley | Knoxville | Montezuma | Nodaway will look to slow this one down, grind out a halfcourt win. Easier said than done against the best backcourt in 1A. Closer than most thing it will be, but too much Trey Shearer at the end of the day. Braves punch repeat ticket to State. |
St. Albert vs. St. Mary’s | MVAOCOU | St. Mary’s | Parochial slugfest, game played in the 40s. CBSA won’t back down from anyone, but St. Mary’s has a few more offensive options, best player on the floor in Spencer Schorg. Hawks book 4th consecutive trip to Des Moines. |
West Fork vs. Ankeny Christian | Nevada | West Fork | Fantastic matchup. Does West Fork have answer for Nic Worsham? Does ACA have an answer for Kayden Ames? Role players decide this one, slightest edge to better 3-point shooting team. Should be a great game. |
Edgewood-Colesburg vs. Wapsie Valley | Prairie | Wapsie Valley | Ed-Co is hot, having just beaten #1 Easton Valley, but undersized Vikings don’t have an answer for 6-7 Kiks Rosengarten. |
South O’Brien vs. Bishop Garrigan | Spencer | Bishop Garrigan | Arguably 2 of the top 5 teams in 1A meet just to get to State. Unfortunate. Bishop Garrigan overwhelming size advantage, but do they have enough shooting to break SOB 2-3? Does SOB have enough scoring alongside Jackson Louscher? Slight edge to Bishop Garrigan here, but should be a great game. |
Class 2A Substate Finals
Game | Location | Our Pick | Reasoning |
Forest City vs. North Linn | Cedar Falls | North Linn | Forest City will look to grind this one down to a halt, easier said than done against constant Lynx pressure. Big nights from the Austins, Hilmer and Miller, lead North Linn back to State to defend title. |
West Sioux vs. South Central Calhoun | Cherokee | West Sioux | High scoring backcourt of Bryce Coppock, Hunter Dekkers vs. powerful frontcourt force of Zane Neubaum. Falcons push the tempo, claw out win in 4Q. Expect lots of points here with #2, #3 scoring offenses in 2A. |
Panorama vs. Treynor | Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln | Treynor | Outside of loss to 6A Kansas power Blue Valley Northwest, Treynor has rolled through their schedule. Shouldn’t have too many issues getting past Panorama here. |
Pella Christian vs. South Hamilton | Marshalltown | Pella Christian | Size of PC’s Josh Van Gorp can limit Cade Balvanz’s effectiveness. Eagles have played toughest schedule in 2A, prepares them for this game. Too many options for South Hamilton to account for. |
Boyden-Hull vs. West Lyon | MOC-Floyd Valley | Boyden-Hull | Comets swept season series by an average of 15 points a game. Balanced, versatile attack from Boyden-Hull too much for Wildcats to slow down. |
Camanche vs. West Burlington | Muscatine | Camanche | Best team in 2A shouldn’t have too many issues against Falcons group that has played significantly weaker schedule. Indians are loaded with talent, size and athleticism. |
Albia vs. Woodward-Granger | Valley | Woodward-Granger | Young but talented Albia team probably a year ahead of schedule, runs into buzz saw led by Bryce Achenbach. Hawks have been great defensively in postseason (33, 38 points allowed). |
Beckman Catholic vs. Monticello | West Delaware | Monticello | Great 2A battle here. Beckman has the best player on the floor in Michael Keegan, Monticello has the better starting 5. Expect a tight, low-possession game decided late. Gut feeling goes to Panthers. |
