MOC-Floyd Valley has taken down multiple quality opponents this season and has the talent to advance back to Des Moines for the first time in four years. While there is a group of playmakers on Loren De Jong’s squad that can step up, a lot will be asked of Northwestern College recruit Alex Van Kalsbeek. The 6-foot-6 senior is the heart and soul of the Dutchmen, as he’s averaged 18.2 points per game and shot an astounding 88.1 percent from the field. He’s also accounted for 211 total rebounds and 76 blocks. Kyle Christy (14.8 PPG) and Keegan Douma (8.8 PPG) have chipped in this season as well. MOC-Floyd Valley heads into substate winning eight of its last nine games.
The biggest threat: Third-ranked Carroll will likely be the biggest obstacle for MOC-Floyd Valley to overcome if they face off in the substate final. The Tigers are a bit of the unknown team heading into 3A-1 Substate, as they’ve only faced one team (Storm Lake) in the bracket. They’re an impressive 18-3, which is never easy to accomplish, but it’s going to likely be tested more than it has been. Potential matchups with Sergeant Bluff-Luton and MOC-Floyd Valley will be big challenges. Senior Karter Lein has led the Tigers this season with 15.8 PPG, while also leading them with 98 rebounds and 88 assists. Seniors Colby Vincent and Colby Christensen will be key as well, while sophomore Kaleb Booth has come off the bench and averaged 12.3 points the last three games.
The dark horse: Sergeant Bluff-Luton has played the role of spoiler in substate two out of the last three seasons. Besides last season when it was a favorite to win its substate, the Warriors were barely over .500 when they reached Des Moines. Adam Vander Schaaf’s bunch is a team loaded with talent and size, but are an underwhelming 11-10 on the season. As noted, this is generally when SB-L peaks as it enters Monday night’s contest against Spencer on a four-game winning streak. Senior Daniel Wright has continued to be consistent this season, despite the Warriors up-and-down season. Wright has averaged 14.5 PPG and 9.4 RPG, while also leading the team in assists (77) and blocks (19). The Warriors also have weapons in point guard Deric Fitzgerald and two other big men in Jake Layman and Majok Majouk. It won’t come as any surprise if SB-L is playing for a trip to the Class 3A State Tournament.
