The Panthers are looking to win their first Tournament of Champions since 2000, but will have to get through two-time defending Group 2 champion Haddonfield first. The state playoffs provide plenty of opportunities for players to break out onto the scene. Here are the top breakout players in South Jersey Group 2.
Brandon Ratcliffe, 6’1 SG West Deptford 2020
Classmate MJ Iraldi has been the driving force for the Eagles this season, but Ratcliffe has the potential to have a big performance in states. The 6’1 shooting guard knows how to move off the ball and cuts hard to the basket. Ratcliffe is a play-maker with the ball in his hands and can rebound the ball in traffic. West Deptford has the opportunity to make a deep run in South Jersey Group 2, meaning Ratcliffe has a chance to breakout against good competition.
Cian Medley, 6’0 PG Camden 2023
Freshman guard DJ Wagner has received a lot of hype for his play as he leads the Panthers in scoring. His chemistry with fellow freshman Medley has made Camden an extremely dangerous team to defend. The young point guard is a blur with the ball in his hands and he knows how to set up his teammates in the halfcourt. Medley is a pest on the ball and he can make tough layups around the basket. Wagner, Kentucky commit Lance Ware and Jerome Brewer have paced the scoring for Camden, but Medley’s play will decide how far the Panthers go in the state tournament.
Andrew Gostovich, 6’1 PG Haddonfield 2020
Gostovich is Haddonfield’s leading scorer and is looking to win his third straight Group 2 title. The 6’1 guard is a marksman from behind the arc as he only needs a few inches of space to get his shot off. Gostovich moves well off the ball and plays with good instincts on both ends of the floor. He has good chemistry with Randolph-Macon commit Ben Cerrato as the seniors create a good inside-out duo. Haddonfield has been one of the top teams in Group 2 this season, but Gostovich will have to step up his game for the Bulldawgs to make their third straight appearance in the TOC.
Te’Sean Pressley, 6’3 SG Haddon Heights 2020
Pressley is an athletic guard who has been making plays for Haddon Heights all season. The 6’3 play-maker can finish above the rim and knows how to make tough shots through traffic. Pressley is an underrated jump shooter and can out leap opponents for rebounds. Haddon Heights has the potential to make a deep run in South Jersey Group 2 and it will be because of Pressley’s all-around play.
Elijah Jones, 6’8 PF Pleasantville 2021
The Greyhounds may only be a 12 seed, but they have the potential to pull off an upset or two. Jones started off the season on fire with three consecutive games with at least 25 points before cooling off. The 6’8 junior uses his length and athleticism to finish above the rim and has a nice touch around the basket. He is a good rebounder down low and knows how to block shots in the paint. Jones has the potential to be a game-changer for Pleasantville because of his length and athleticism, which could lead to an upset win over Barnegat.
