Continue ReadingAs we enter a new year we try to piece together what teams belong in the conversation and what teams are on the outside looking in. The RPI came out last week and a few things are right but there is a lot of wrong with the early RPI rankings. When it is all said and done it might work itself out but till then we will try and give the best assessment to the rankings.
6A
1.Fremont (9-0)
The Dallin Hall lead team looks like the team to beat in 6A. As they look down the two teams under them are in the same region so something has to give as they play them twice. This Friday Davis will visit Fremont in a big region game.
2.Layton ((8-0)
Layton has one of the most complete rosters in the state as they have good guards and bigs. Layton has five players scoring in double figures but they are lead in scoring by Ethan Potter. Ethan is a Division 1 big in the making.
3.Davis (8-0)
Davis has the ability to shake things up with a visit to Fremont this Friday. They will need a big game from Spencer Vernon and Jake Sampson. Win or lose the Darts are one of the top teams in 6A.
4.Lone Peak (7-3)
The Knights can go to so many players on their roster for productivity. Corbin Zetner and Josh Jackson are leading them in multiple categories in the stat sheet. Region 4 will be wild as always but Lone Peak could be in the mix for a region championship.
5.Skyridge (7-4)
With tough losses to quality opponents the Skyridge tandem guard combo in Duncan Reid and Luke Brower could be tough to stop. Watching them play Bishop Gorman tough as they’re one of the best teams in the country is promising.
6.Herriman (9-4)
LeGrand Burgess and Kase Petersen have a great inside outside game and supporting cast. They seem to be getting better every game. Region 3 has 4-5 teams that can make a run at them.
7.Corner Canyon (9-4)
The Chargers are lead by Junior duo Carter Welling and Trace Ross. The Chargers will have their hands full this upcoming game as they face Copper Hills.
8.Bingham (6-5)
The Miners have played some tough competition in-state and out of state. Bingham has a lot of talent that has experience. 6’2 Justis Reiser could be the difference maker because of his shooting.
9.Pleasant Grove (7-4)
The Vikings are young but gaining experience along the way. Isaac Vaha is coming into his own. PG will have to prove itself in region 4 play like everyone else.
10.Westlake (7-3)
Hunter Phillips is averaging a quiet 16 points a game. Westlake will be in a battle every game in Region 4 but could quickly move up the rankings.
5A
1.Timpview (11-1)
The Tarkanian Champions in their division in Las Vegas have a showdown against Timpanogos. Jaxon Santiago and Jake Whalin are leading the way in scoring, but the difference maker is going to be Coleman Ford. Coleman is going to have to distribute, control the tempo and score.
2.Maple Mountain (8-1)
Maple Mountain has some big wins this year as they beat Corner Canyon, Orem, Alta and Timpanogos. Braxton Tanner is leading them in points scored and rebounds.
4.Woods Cross (9-3)
The Wildcats had a great showing in San Diego. Jake Howe is starting to hit a grove, but most impressively is that he is getting help from other players not named Tyler Roberts. This can make them even more dangerous.
5.Timpanogos (9-2)
The T-Wolves have a great record as they have played one of the tougher schedules in all of 5A. With multiple players that contribute to the team this team is another dangerous one.
6.Payson (7-3)
One of the more intriguing teams in all of 5A as they have beat some high quality programs in Juan Diego, Westlake and some tough out of state teams in Las Vegas. Samuel Mitchell is a player you cannot lose track of. Looking forward to seeing how they fair in region play.
7.East (4-3)
When you have a player that can take over at any given time against any team you are dangerous and that is what East has. Andre Mulibea s that player.
8.Provo (8-1)
Provo is unproven but they have a great record. They will be tested against Wasatch as they play next. Juan Pablo Camargo is the player that needs to step up his play if they want to prove the doubters wrong.
9.Alta (8-5)
Alta has a solid point guard and big combo with Jaden Brownell and Hunter Humphries. Their game against Lehi will be a nice measuring stick.
10.Bountiful (5-6)
Many people expected the Braves to be closer to the top of this list then the bottom but a tough schedule has proven to be difficult. Robert Whaley is a load inside and it looks like Bountiful is starting to figure it out.
4A
1.Sky View (7-2)
Sky View has had some time off but they play in Idaho next. They’re still the team to beat as Mason Falslev makes his case for Utah’s Mr. Basketball.
3.Dixie (8-2)
Dixie has the formula and the players to win it all this year. Their tough region play will battle test them for a playoff run.
3.Pine View (6-3)
With an uncharacteristic loss to Manti we will see what Pine View has in the tank to withstand a tough Region.
4.Green Canyon (5-3)
With only one player that gets minutes that doesn’t hit three-pointers Green Canyon is dangerous.
5.Cedar City (6-3)
The biggest team in 4A and if they slow the game down and feed their bigs they can hurt a lot of teams.
6.Stansbury (9-3)
Had a close game against Hurricane and has some good players that make adjustments. A poor region could hurt them in the playoffs.
7.Hurricane (8-2)
Hurricane is another team that shoots the ball well and is lead by a nice point guard in Bryce Thomas. Hurricane has multiple was it can score and they rebound the ball well for a team that doesn’t have a lot of size.
8.Juan Diego (6-5)
Juan Diego ‘s recent play might suggest that they’re figuring their new team out as they beat one of the best teams in 4A in Bear River. Matty Rodriguez had a breakout game.
9.Bear River (8-3)
The Mark Huber lead Bears are dangerous but if their shots aren’t falling they will have a tough time beating teams.
10.Ridgeline (7-4)
Ridgeline is that sleeper team nobody wants to play. They shoot the ball well and are well coached. They have a great 2-3 zone and play a tough man defense.
