1. Middle Creek Mustangs (3-0)
The Middle Creek Mustangs have been the surprise squad in the South Wake Athletic Conference so far in 2019-20 with a 3-0 record. They’re 6-2 overall on the year heading into the bulk of conference play with wins over Apex Friendship and Holly Springs already. Tharius Suggs (2021) and Sam Perez (2021) have been hard to stop this season with Suggs averaging 17.3 points per contest and Perez producing 16.6 points per game. They’ll be a team to keep an eye on in the SWAC.
2. Garner Magnet Trojans (3-0)
Garner Magnet is another squad that’s remained unbeaten in conference action through the early going with a record of 3-0. They defeated the Apex Friendship Patriots 91-77 on Dec. 13 in a game where 2022 forward Asa White put up 25 points. With Daveon Dunn, Chris Nobles and White, they’re another team that could make some noise in the SWAC.
3. Apex Friendship Patriots (2-2)
Apex Friendship has had an interesting conference slate so far given both of their losses in SWAC play have come on the road. They’re not in terrible shape at 2-2 but the two teams ahead of them already hold the momentum in head-to-head play with early victories. They’ll have little room for error going forward but with NC State-bound forward Nick Farrar in the fold, they should come out fine as conference play gets underway.
4. Holly Springs Golden Hawks (2-2)
The Golden Hawks are 2-2 in SWAC play but one of those losses came by two points in overtime to Middle Creek. They’re a formidable opponent with Kaleb Scott in the frontcourt. He’ll be a solid addition at Georgia State at the next level. As they go through some growing pains, they should be fine by the end of conference action.
5. Fuquay-Varina Bengals (1-2)
The Bengals are 1-2 in conference play so far after going 2-10 all season in 2018-19. Their first conference victory didn’t come until Jan. 11 last year so with one win out the way already, it will be interesting to see where they end up.
6. Apex Cougars (1-2)
The Apex Cougars are 1-2 so far heading into the bulk of the conference schedule. They hold a victory over South Garner but a loss against Holly Springs and Garner Magnet is something to keep them on the outside looking in. They’ll have some work to do heading into January.
7. South Garner Titans (0-4)
The South Garner Titans are 6-8 on the season overall but remain winless so far in SWAC play. Four of their losses have come against four different teams in the conference. On the return game, they’ll look for their young group to turn the tide and get better results.
