Game Recap: Fairfield came in as the #3 team in all of Alabama and showed it. They were an extremely veteran team with 8 seniors. The entire offense went through the big 6’6″ Reginald Perry. Hazel Green shot the ball well at times, but struggled to consistently get open shots. It was essentially all Fairfield the entire time.
Fairfield’s Key Players:
–Reginald Perry (#4): Size, size, size. Perry stood at 6’6″ weighing roughly 300 lbs. He’s a dual-sport athlete committed to Tennessee to play defensive tackle next Fall. The entire offense ran through him rightfully so. He finished gently around the rim. His size allowed him to contest shots, often without even trying. He dominated both sides of the ball and finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 3 steals. .
–Malachi Holt-Bennet (#2): Malachi really looked to shoot and shot the ball well (5-12). He followed his shot well collecting 4 offensive rebounds and finishing one off with a pretty tip in. He finished with 12 points and 7 rebounds.
–Jadarrius Torrance (#5): Jadarrius shot the ball well early in the game going 2-4 from three point land in the first half. He cooled off in the second half, but was a good third piece for Fairfield finishing with 10 points.
Hazel Green’s Key Players:
-Connor Haythorn (#11): Connor was a shooter hands down. He shot 3-5 from the three point line finishing with 9 points. He was more valuable on some of the intangibles. He had a nose for the ball and was not afraid to dive after a loose ball to help his team.
–Ti Scruggs (#23): Without Ti Scruggs, this game would have been very ugly. Despite being outsized, he really defended Reginald Perry well. He did great at denying the entry pass and forcing several deflections. He only recorded 1 official steal, but generated more for his teammates. Against the smaller opposing players, he was able to block shots and protect the paint. He was able to extend the floor against Perry and shoot the mid-range. He had the tendency to get a little too emotional and give up on the play when he was beat rather than sticking with it. He finished with 12 points and 9 rebounds.
Fairfield will play Bob Jones in the Winner’s Bracket on Friday. Hazel Green will play Muscle Shoals in the Loser’s Bracket.
