The game was highly anticipated and it certainly lived up to the hype. Neither team was able to create much separation throughout the game, and it took an overtime effort from the Eagles to pull off the win.
There was plenty of talent on both teams, and here’s a look at some of the top standouts from the game.
1. Dominick Harris – Rancho Christian 2020
Harris, a Gonzaga commit, is just a solid all-around floor leader. He led the Eagles in the win with 30 points. He’s got great court awareness and knows how to find the balance between getting his own shot and creating looks for his teammates. Great three-point shooter. Can attack the rim with ease. Definitely ready for the college level.
2. Ziaire Williams – Sierra Canyon 2020
Williams made his season debut for the Trailblazers after having to sit out per CIF transfer rules. He adds such a different dimension to Sierra Canyon and makes them that much more dangerous. He’s a versatile player who can excel on the wing, but also play inside a bit. He’s probably the best three-point shooter on the wings that the Trailblazers have. An athletic finisher at the rim. He’s a matchup nightmare.
3. Jaden Byers – Rancho Chrsitian 2021
Byers is a player who should see his stock rise as the season progresses. He showed a ton of heart in the Eagles win. He missed two critical free-throws in the fourth quarter, but redeemed himself with several crucial plays in overtime. He’s a strong perimeter defender with quick hands. He may not be the biggest guard out there, but he has solid body control and finishes strong at the rim.
4. Shy Odom – Sierra Canyon 2022
On a team that has a lot of big name players, Odom could end up being one of the most important players this season. Sierra Canyon had some question marks in terms of interior defense coming into the season, but Odom can certainly solve that. He’s the best man-to-man interior defender the Trailblazers have. Played some decent man defense on Evan Mobley. He isn’t extremely tall, but he makes up for it with his quick hands and mobility.
5. Jayce Catchings – Rancho Christian 2020
Catchings is a transfer from Missouri and has brought a solid wing presence to the Eagles. He can shoot off the dribble and he can get himself to the rim and draw contact. Pretty solid three-point shooter who hit some key threes to keep the Eagles in striking distance when Sierra Canyon was trying to build a lead. Nice pull-up jumper when in transition.
