Carlsbad High played host to eight games, beginning with the 9:30 a.m. tilt between San Diego and Brea Olinda and culminating with an instant classic between Capistrano Valley and Poway, which needed a 50-foot buzzer beater to decide the outcome.
The final game is the subject of our next key takeaways segment.
BSN Sports Showcase – Capistrano Valley 48, Poway 46: Five takeaways
Connor Gleason’s shot was the highlight of the showcase…
It was a day full of standout performances, but nothing lived up to the final 1.6 seconds of this game. With the Titans holding a 46-45 advantage, 6-0 Capo Valley PG Conner Gleason — who was standing out of bounds as a secondary trigger man — ran back into play and casually weaved his way past a Titans defender before hoisting up the game-winning shot from just beyond halfcourt. It was as impressive as it sounds.
…but Poway’s performance speaks to its depth
But this game told me a lot more about Poway than it did the victors. Poway was without three of its key contributors – 6-6 forward Tanner Swindall and 6-5 twins Logan and Lucas Shepard – who were playing in a club volleyball tournament. The fact they were in the game to begin with was a suprise, but they were dominating the second half before a final-minute collapse. Miles Wingfield was impressive defensively against fellow 2021 G Langston Redfield, a touted point guard prospect.
Adam Sevier is a winner, plain and simple
Sevier was devastated after the shot fell for Capo Valley, but it shouldn’t take away from the moxie that he displayed the entire game. While not shooting a great percentage (no one really did, for that matter), Sevier made tough shots and played very good on-ball defense for the Titans. His intangibles (plays with a chip on his shoulder) are incredible.
Gleason’s stretch play was impressive
Poway actually held a 46-40 lead with under a minute to go and seemed to have the game in hand, but the determined Gleason scored the game’s final eight points. The lefty is super shifty with the ball, has a quick first step, understands how to draw defenses and kick to open teammates, and has an uncanny ability to finish around the rim for a player his size. Plus, he’s a pesky on-ball defenders. In many ways, he reminds me a lot of the player whom he was matched up against most of the night, Sevier.
Cole Stephens play continues to stand out
The 6-9 Stephens continues to improve his offensive repertoire, scoring from the post and midrange and rebounding fairly well against Capo’s physical frontcourt. As he improves his lateral quickness and rim protection on defense, he’ll become a nice target for schools.
