The 18-game event, held Sept. 28 at Colony High, featured five teams from Riverside County that won both games they played.
Notable among those was Rancho Christian (in Temecula, Southern California’s “wine capital”).
And anytime you see or hear “Rancho Christian” in a sports context, that same sentence always includes Evan Mobley.
The 7-footer is not only the No. 1 player in the West from the Class of 2020, he’s the nation’s top senior as well.
All of the reasons why were on display while he was leading his team to wins over Canyon of Anaheim and Phhoenix Red (a club program from Arizona that is gregarious in its use of “h”).
The combination of size, innate athletic skill and basketball tools that he brings to the floor is found only in the NBA right now.
Among the other outstanding players from the Class of 2022 who were on display at the event were guards Dominick Harris (Rancho Christian) and the Riverside Poly backcourt of Lamont Butler (pictured) and Evan Oliver.
The 6-4 Harris is about as athletically explosive guard as there is in the region. He’s bound for Gonzaga.
Butler (who is committed to San Diego State) leads a team that is among the state’s most underrated. The Bears’ backcourt will be as good as any in the state, with Oliver (who was very good here) now joined by D.J. Davis (a recent transfer from Corona Centennial).
His team lost twice (with late 3s) but Birmingham also had one of the better seniors in the event – and one of the most underrated in the Class of 2020 – in 6-5 Elisha Cofield.
