AAU Weekend Recap: May 10-12
AAU season is in full swing. Most teams have played several tournaments at this point and some players are seeing their stock rise with each passing weekend. Mother’s Day Weekend is a pretty popular weekend for big tournaments. Many of Kentucky’s top programs were in action this weekend, several at the KBC in Lexington for the Bluegrass Games State Tournament. Here’s a recap of the action from this past weekend. We will have more in-depth breakdowns of the Bluegrass State Games as we move through the week.
Kentucky Ambition 16u went 0-3 on the weekend at the State Tournament. Oldham County’s Sam Campbell and Lincoln County’s Baylor Mattingly. Salute to Oldham County’s Xander Wagner who tore his meniscus Saturday then played the Sunday game with the injury. Tough kid for sure.
Pride Athletics had all 3 age groups represented at the KBC state tournament. All 3 age groups won advanced to Championship bracket play. Cole Thompson was good for the 2021 group, Rodrell Dryden of Dunbar was good on the weekend for the 2020 team, including a 31 point/20 rebound game. North Laurel’s Clay Sizemore led the 15u team while hitting 22 three pointers over the 4 game span.
Iam3rd Ice had both 2020 teams in the State Tournament at KBC. The Blue team went 2-2 with Marquis Mackey and Brayden Sebastian playing well. The White team went 1-2 and were led by Scott County’s Neil Baker.
Kentucky Defenders played in the EG10 Classic in Indiana and came home with a trophy. They won the 2020 South Silver Championship. John Hardin’s Preston Murrell had some big games, including 20 points and 6 rebounds on Saturday morning.
Kentucky Titans went 3-2 at the Hilltopper Roundup. Male’s Kobey Scott averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds per game on the weekend and Wyatt Supplee had a team high 27 point game.
Kentucky Vision played at the KBC this weekend and had a good showing. Their 16s lost in the Championship game and their 17s made the semifinals of the Championship bracket. Butler duo of Tre Minter and Cam Underwood were good all weekend while Cory Vanhoose and Jerry Belton were both good for the 16u team this weekend.
The Fort Campbell Snipers 17u team went 4-0 at the Gatorade session 2. 2021 Muhlenberg point guard Nash Divine had games of 17, 7, 20 and 17 again while playing up an age group.
Louisville Elite 16u played in the Adidas May Classic this weekend and won the bronze bracket after two tough losses in pool play Saturday. Trey Stone and Johnny McCauley of Male had big weekends for the Elite team.
Kentucky Select played at the State Tournament and their 15u team won the Gold Bracket after losing both pool play games on Saturday then winning the championship by 36 on Sunday. Owen Setters of St. Henry and Brent Smithers of Walton-Verona had good weekends. The 16u Select also won the Gold Bracket after going 1-1 in pool play. They were led by Tyler Bush (Ryle), Quantez Calloway (Holmes) and Jacob Deere (Cooper). The 17u Select went 1-2 on the weekend but Ben Vickers (Grant Co) and Zac Jennings (Cooper) stood out for the 2020 Select squad.
Manimal Elite 15u lost in the Final 4 of the state. Cade Stinnett was efficient all weekend long and Brandon Rayzer-Moore was scoring the ball all weekend long. The 16u Manimal squad won the state championship with Rooster Woodard earning MVP honors for the weekend. Their 17u won 2 pool games but didn’t play the tournament due to conflicts with their Ohio players.
M.A.T.T.S. Mustangs 15u fell in the semifinals of the KBC State tournament. Rico Cole-Carr was dynamic all weekend. The 16u Mustangs also fell in the semifinals. Scotty Draud had a big weekend for the 2021 bunch. The 17u Mustangs won the State title and were led by Marcellus Vail and Dayvion McKnight.
