SubscribeLAGUNA NIGUEL – Some of the very best players from the national Class of 2020 are located in Southern California.
And the current consensus choice as the No. 1 junior in the country fits into that category as well.
Rancho Christian High is located in one of the finest wine-producing regions in the west, Temecula.
The irony isn’t lost on me either:
Rancho Christian’s Evan Mobley’s on-court skills are aging like very fine wine.
Most everything he’s done on the court over the past three years – for his high school squad or the Compton Magic grassroots program – has been vintage.
Mobley, who continues his final “season” with the Magic this weekend during the adidas Gauntlet in Dallas, is the choice as the top player on my all-Southern California Junior Class team for the 2018-19 season.
The Compton Magic 17U squad was the best in the country last spring and summer, which is understandable considering the make-up of that team.
The 2018 Magic roster also included first-team, All-SoCal Junior selections Jaylen Clark (Corona Centennial) and Johnny Juzang (Harvard-Westlake), along with the USC-bound duo of Onyeka Okongwu (Chino Hills) and Mobley’s older brother, Isaiah.
Other first-team selections are Josh Christopher (who led Mayfair to the Southern Section 2AA title), Ian Martinez (JSerra) and Ziaire Williams (Notre Dame).
Juzang announced Wednesday afternoon that he will complete his graduation (and NCAA initial eligibility) academic requirements this spring, bypassing his “senior” year to enroll in college – which could be national champion Virginia or Kentucky – for the 2019-20 academic year and season.
