In a back-and-forth battle, Seattle Select High Academic used a run late to pull away from Deep Three and capture the 17U Open Division Championship of The Hoop Memorial Day Classic, 55-47.
The game was tight throughout, with Deep Three holding a slim 26-24 lead at the half. It was tied at 44-all with five minutes to go. But a three-pointer by Eddy Hochsprung (2019 Sehome) with a minute left to go broke open a 53-47 lead for Seattle High Academic and a dunk by Clayton Whitman (2019 Lynden) off a turnover several seconds later sealed the win.
“It’s a great group of guys and they’ve got a lot of character,” said Seattle Select High Academic head coach Chase Young. “When they play hard like this together, it’s just beautiful to watch, beautiful to coach.”
Whitman led the way for Seattle Select High Academic with 18 points and 10 rebounds and point guard Charles Elzie III (2019 Bellarmine Prep) added 11. For Deep Three, Robert Ford (2018 Jefferson)led the way with 16 points, James Husband (2019 Fort Vancouver) scored 11, and Tyshawn Ford (2018 Portland Adventist) added 10 while Seyi Reilly (2018 De La Salle North) pulled down a game-high 12 boards.

– Nike Team Northwest 17U Team Knight fought off a late charge from Dribble Drive Elite and captured the Gold Division, 86-76.
– Nike Team Northwest 17U Team Swoosh rode the hot hand of Keylin Vance (2019 Jefferson) and his 34 points to get past Team Fly Williams for the Silver Division Championship, 87-79.
– Roots Tilton knocked off Team Fly Anderson, 68-37, for the Bronze Championship.
– And in the 16U Open Championship, Team Bradley raced past the home team Hoop Salem, 61-44, for the title.
