Region Preview: Region 11
Although everyone starts with a clean slate and a fair chance, Juan Diego is the heavy favorite in Region 11. This team is loaded with talented prospects. Further, a number of the teams in this region will be rebuilding and trying to insert role players from last year into more prominent roles.
Region Preview: Region 11
1. Juan Diego
Juan Diego is one of the favorites to win the state championship in addition to Region 11. Juan Diego lost a couple of key prospects from last year’s run. However, they bring back one of the most difficult players to guard in the entire state. Jason Ricketts has had a lot of success during his time at Juan Diego. This season should be no different. In fact, it is safe to assume that this dangerous prospect will take hon a bigger role. In addition to Ricketts, Juan Diego brings back sharp shooter, Matt Kitzman, and talented guard Isaac Arroyo. Arroyo was huge for Juan Diego last season as he manged the tempo of the games well and put his teammates in positions where they could experience success.
2. Stansbury
Although Stansbury will lose a key part of their team from last year in Jase Wanlass, the group looks poised to be able to compete in this region. Josh Jenkins had a huge role as a Junior last season and will be expected to take on more of the workload now that Wanlass is gone. His length and activity will be crucial to the success of Stansbury. In addition to Jenkins, Drake Schlappi brings decent length and another presence on the glass. The physicality of these two will aid Stansbury in winning the rebounding battle. Lastly, Casey Roberts, who was one of the leaders in assists for the team last year, will need to contribute more. If he is able to increase his assist total and get others involved, this team has a lot of potential.
3. Tooele
Despite not having a stellar record, Tooele did have a decent season last year. Further, they have the vast majority of their team back in a region that seems to be fairly wide open except for the top spot. Outside of Juan Diego, almost anyone is capable of finishing anywhere in this region. However, due to Kyler Hymas, Dawson Banks, and Jeno Bins, Tooele has to feel as though they are capable of competing in this region and in this classification. It will be interesting to see how these prospects step into the limelight and if they are able to achieve more success than they had last year.
