Recruiting Report: Brooks Gype (2018)

The last time we saw 6’3” guard Brooks Gype (2018), he was walking off the court at the Schott, following a 45-30 Wauseon loss to Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary in the Division II State Championship game. Energy from last year’s postseason run still lingers. “You can definitely feel a little bit of hype left from last season. But, coming into it we’ve got to have the same mentality. I think we’re doing a pretty good job of that,” Gype said. Gype and Austin Rotroff, will lead the Indians as seniors. “I think my role is going to be a little bit bigger, considering I’m a senior and having two years under my belt already ... We’ve got to replace Carter Bzovi. So, obviously, I’m going to have to step up a little bit. But I think we have other guys who can step up in that role too,” Gype explained. Gype is an unselfish player from the wing who prefers to create for others via the pass. “Our offense kind of runs through me, kind of. But, at the same time, it’s running through Austin [Rotroff] because he’s obviously the best player on the court at almost any point. So, I think that I create quite a bit for our team and I’m a hard matchup for other teams,” Gype said. In finding a college program, Gype hopes to find a style of play that resembles his experience at Wauseon. “With the style that we play at Wauseon, it’s not the most typical style. It’s a bit of a slower pace and we focus on defense quite a bit. I think that I can adapt to about anything if I wanted to. But, I don’t want to get into a run-and-gun, no defense. I want to play fundamental basketball still,” Gype said. Just last Friday, Gype received his first offer, from Indiana University South Bend (IUSB). “I hadn’t really heard from them much, until about a week and a half before I went on that visit ... The campus is really nice,” Gype said. Along with IUSB, Gype is also looking into a number of programs from Indiana and Ohio. “I’ve visited Trine, ONU, and UNOH. I think I’m going to Ohio Wesleyan here in like two weeks. And then, I think I might try to hit up Marietta too,” Gype said. The senior carries a 3.875 GPA and a score of 24 on the ACT. He is in no rush to make a college decision, and it would be no surprise if more options open up for him if Wauseon has another strong season. “I’m going to let things play out until, at least, midway through the season, if not all the way through,” Gype said.
