Freshman to Watch: Ahmad Harrison (2021)
After a brief absence from the Freshman to Watch series, we’re back this time with Gerstell Academy’s Ahmad Harrison.
Like many of the special incoming freshman in the state, Harrison posseses a great feel for the game even at the varsity level. The 6-foot guard is a good example of the modern day point guard in that when there is a bucket needed, he’ll get it. His ball-handling skills allow him to operate effectively in pick-and-rolls sets. In transition, he makes smooth shifty moves at high speeds to put his defender in bad position to get a clean contest on his attempt.
Harrison played with Team Thrill this summer on the UAA circuit. Although he had some impressive performances, he felt as if he didn’t prove himself enough. That’s what type of person he is. Never satisfied and always wanting to be the best. You can tell simply by watching him play for a few minutes.
The lefty got his first taste of varsity level basketball during the St. Paul’s Summer League. He was one of the standouts in the league as a whole that consisted of highly ranked players throughout the state. He helped lead Gerstell to the championship, but came up short against Poly.
Harrison doesn’t need to be the one scoring to impact a game. He has traditional point guard passing abilities and adds entertainment with a little touch of craft whenever possible. His competitive mindset makes him an energetic defensive player. Whenever his man scores on him, it’s taken personally and Harrison is going to lock in to be sure he can do all he can for it not to happen again.
Harrison told PrepHoops the main thing he wanted to improve on this summer was he attitude throughout the ups and downs that a game brings. From the times I have seen him, Harrison has seemed even-keeled and positive, but frustrations can set in and hurt any young player. Although Gerstell has a lot of talent this season, he’ll still be expected to carry much of the offensive production, so an improved attitude will be key.
Hampton University has been the only school reported that has shown interest in Harrison.
In terms of goals for his freshman campaign, there is only one thing on his mind:
“To put a banner in my school,” Harrison claimed.
