All official visits are now canceled.
“We had some official visits set up to other schools,” said father Mike Broughton. “But he said, ‘my mind is made up.'”
Broughton had offers from Tennessee Tech, Southeast Missouri, Miami (Oh), Western Kentucky, EKU, Clemson, Samford, UAB, and most recently UNC-Asheville.
Butler was hovering. In fact, they might have offered soon.
“We have been in contact with Butler University,” said Mr. Broughton. “There was a very good possibility that they would have offered in the next few weeks. Butler came in at the end of the process. They have three guard spots opened, but he wants to go to the OVC. I think Eastern is going to make some people surprised in the next few years with transfers.”
Peyton was locked in and picked EKU because of the fit, but also because they wanted him for a long time.
“He has always been told, got good advice from Coach Happy Osborne,” said Mr. Broughton. “You can go to the college of your dream, but go where you are wanted. You go where you they want you to go. He got that feeling strongly from Eastern. I think it is great choice.”
Clemson missed and UAB had their talons in. But EKU did the legwork. And it paid off. Almost every game he played in July was in front of an EKU coach. Head Coach Dan McHale watched most personally.
A volume scorer for North Laurel High School, Peyton Broughton is a physically-imposing, multi-faceted athlete that can really thrive in the Ohio Valley Conference.
He offers size at the shooting guard. He can shoot or slash, rebound or defend. The versatility truly makes him a high major player. Level doesn’t matter as much when you find what you are looking for nearby.
Broughton will take one official visit, to his future home, EKU. That visit is concrete. Look for it to be late October when the date is announced by the Broughtons. Years of AAU, hours of work behind-the-scenes, and the realization of a dream.
Richmond, Kentucky is the new beneficiary of Peyton Broughton. The Kentucky kid is staying home.
