Stepping into Gonce’s shoes has been 2016 point guard Hasaan Decarolis, who has emerged as a high impact performer for the Warriors this season, leading West to the Gateway Athletic Conference North championship.
The 5’10” Decarolis has been receiving interest from schools at the Division II, NAIA and junior college levels. Interest has come from schools such as Maryville, UMSL, Williams Woods, Westminster, Kirkwood College (IA), Trevecca (TN) and Moberly Area Community College.
Decarolis has an excellent blend of speed, quickness and shooting ability. He is very good at getting in the lane and finishing amongst the trees, but he has started to knock down 3-pointers.
“My strengths as a player are using my quickness to get to the basket and finishing or getting to the free throw line,” Decarolis said. “But I’m also starting to find my shooting stroke from 3-point range.”
As a senior, Decarolis is currently averaging 19.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. He is shooting 48 percent from the field and 36 percent from 3-point range. As a junior, Decarolis played off Gonce, who was good at penetrating and kicking out for open jumpers, usually to Decarolis. This season, Decarolis has been able to display his ability to create plenty of offense for himself and his teammates.
“The key to my success was my coach getting on me about being in the weight room so I could be stronger and faster,” Decarolis said. “And my trainer, Alex Bazzell from Pure Sweat, who in my opinion is the best trainer around here.”
Decarolis scored a season-high 33 points in the Warriors victory over rival St. Charles in a game that clinched the conference title. He really displayed the 3-point stroke, making six from long distance.
“My jump shot was really working for me in that game,” he said. “I think I only had about three layups in that game,”
With a conference title in hand, Decarolis is looking to lead the Warriors to a district championship. St. Charles West is the No. 1 seed in the Class 4, District 7 tournament, which begins next week.
