September 11, 2015

PHM’s 3rd-ranked 2018, Poly's Demetrius Mims may be highly-ranked, but he’s still waiting for his first offer to come his way.

Still with three years to hash out his recruitment, it’s not too alarming that the 6-foot-5 wing has no offers yet -- but he certainly has a nice list of high-major Division I recruitment.

“I don’t currently have any offers, but I have interest from UNLV, Georgetown, Notre Dame, California, Maryland and a few other schools,” said Mims.

“I would say UNLV and Georgetown are the two after me the most, so far.”

One of the finer prospects in the state, it’s only fitting that Mims ran with one of the state‘s best grassroots programs this offseason; Team Melo.

“This offseason I got a lot better at rebounding, and created a lot of offensive and defensive possessions for our team,” said Mims. “And I got better at ball-handling and reading screens and stuff like that, and I’m better off the dribble than I used to be.”

The 6-foot-5 wing says he has spent most of his career as a two or a three, but he may expand his game and learn the point guard role a bit this season with Poly.

“I’m actually a two/three right now because of my size, and my my high school team is trying to get me to play more point guard,” said Mims.

“I’m an isolation type player and I like to get out in transition. I don’t think a lot of people can stop me if I get out in transition with momentum going towards the basket. I’m a good finisher around the rim, and if you leave me open I can hit some jump-shots.”

Mims started last season as a freshman, with the Engineers, and will look to have an increased role this season.

“This year my position will change a little bit, so I have more of a role to score now, and my teammates will be getting me the ball more to score,” he said. “I’d like to score at least 15 points and averaged 6 assists per game.”
