Recruiting Report: Deandre Burnside (2016)

<h2>September 23, 2015</h2><p><em>By trushing</em></p> <p>One of 2016’s top point guards, Bishop Heelan’s <strong>Deandre Burnside</strong> is still offer-less, but seems on the verge of picking up his first.</p> <p>He’s hearing from a variety of Division II programs, with some light Division I recruitment, and one NAIA school seems hot on his trail.</p> <p>“There’s quite a few schools that have shown a lot of interest. South Dakota came to an open gym last Sunday to watch. Upper Iowa, I’ve been on two visits there, also Mount Marty (NAIA), I’ve been on a visit there and they’ve been calling and getting a hold of me. And then Nebraska-Kearney and Concordia (St. Paul) have reached out to me.”</p> <p>Burnside has also seen light interest come in from Wayne State, University of Mary, and Western Illinois. He says Mount Marty and Upper Iowa are the two schools pursuing the most right now.</p> <p>The 5-foot-11 point guard spent his 17U offseason playing Showtime Hoopers, a program he was new to after spending previous seasons with the Barnstormers.</p> <p>“I made the switch because with the Barnstormers practice was like four hours away, so I decided to just play in town, actually where we practiced for Showtime was just down the street from my house,” said Burnside.</p> <p>“I think I played pretty well, I lead the team. I’m kind of a scoring point guard, so I scored a lot, and I think I did pretty well with that team.”</p> <p>After averaging 16.5 points and 2.4 assists per game last season with the Crusaders, Burnside is ready to make the leap to senior leader.</p> <p>“I’ve been working on my left hand a lot, and I’m trying to work on my pull-up jumpers and being able to stop the dribble. And I think I played pretty well over the summer, and my pull-up has gotten way better,” said Burnside.</p> <p>“I don’t think my role will really change much this season. I mean I’m definitely the leader now, so I have to have everybody right and doing what they&#39;re supposed to.”</p> <h2>September 5, 2014</h2><p><em>by thines21</em><br /> <br /> Playing with a rare collection of talent, <strong>Deandre Burnside</strong> had to alter his game a bit this summer while with the Iowa Barnstormers’ 16U squad.</p> <p>“I’m pretty much a scorer,” Burnside told <em>PHI</em>, “but on that team I had to pass a little more than my high school team because there were a lot more better players on our team, and I pretty much had to learn how to be a better point guard on that team instead of being just a scorer.</p> <p>“It’s really good for me because when I get to college, I’m going to have to be more of a point guard. I’m not going to be able to score as much because I’m undersized.”</p> <p>The 5-foot-10 Bishop Heelan point guard and out 19th-ranked in 2016.</p> <p>Burnside averaged 9.9 points per game on 43.2 percent shooting a year ago.</p> <p>“I’m a scoring point guard,” he said. “I’ve been working on my jump shot. It’s been getting better. I’m an athletic point guard. I can get to the rim, get to the line.”</p> <p>He’ll inherit an even bigger role with this winter with the Crusaders with the graduation of leading scorer  Keaton Slaughter.</p> <p>“I’m going to have to take quite a bit of shots,” Burnside said. “ I’ve been training to where I can make any shot that comes. I’m going to have to be able to make any shot. Say it’s at the end of the game, I’m going to have to be the guy that takes the last three or gets to the line and wins us the game.”</p> <p>Burnside has already heard from plenty of recruiters, with South Dakota, Wayne State, Morningside, the University of Mary, Briar Cliff and Drake all reaching out.</p>
