And while it wasn’t done for basketball reasons, that side of his life certainly isn’t going to be hindered by it. For the class of 2017 small forward, moving to Bishop Luers High School from Northrop High School provides a chance to play with great players and for a state championship.
“I transferred because of the academics, and I see it as a really good opportunity to excel and prepare for college,” Berry said. “We also got a lot of big expectations over there with us right now and all looking to push deep into the state tourney and hopefully get a couple SAC Tournaments, too.”
The 6-foot-4 Berry, ranked No. 44 in the Prep Hoops Indiana Top 180, now has the opportunity to excel in the classroom and on the basketball court. That won’t be too new for him as his summer play pushed him and Team Legit to strong showings.
“It was really fun and we went deep into really big tournaments and won one in Las Vegas and then went down to Atlanta and got into the semi-finals of that tournament for the Under Armour Nationals, so that was big for us,” Berry said.
This play garnered interest from Cornell, where Berry will head for the team’s junior day next month.
The coaches told him they liked his motor and ability to run the floor. He also has a strong defensive presence and the ability to score when called upon.
This summer and the strong competition also showed him what he needs to improve to garner more interest as well.
“A bunch of coaches told me that I really need to work and get my dribbling down and my jumpshot a little bit more consistent,” he said.
With a stronger academic challenge and those improvements, Berry has the chance to see his recruiting stock rise even further as he enters his third high school season.
